Or take the Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station, directly under the Garden. Or take Metro-North Railroad to Grand Central Terminal; it's just 10 minutes by subway to the Garden.

The National Hockey League is in full swing at the Garden October through April. From NY Penn Station, take any NJ Transit train to Newark Penn Station or Newark Broad St station. Once there, look for the yellow/black signs for the free New York Red Bulls Trolley service.
