Destination Kent State FYE FlashTopics

Fall 2014 Destination Kent State FYE FlashTopics

All Kent State students are required to complete the university requirement: US 10097 Destination Kent State FYE. Enrolling in a FlashTopic section of US 10097 allows students to connect with other students who share a common interest. FlashTopic sections will cover the same material as traditional US 10097 courses, but will incorporate discussions, group activities and exploration related to a specific topic.

Let your advisor know if you'd like to take one of the FlashTopics listed below:

CONNECTIONS: SERVICE-LEARNING AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

This Flashtopic will give students the opportunity to establish a deeper understanding of social justice issues affecting our communities and introduce them to the practice of creating social change through community-driven projects. As we learn by doing, these projects will emphasize systematic change rather than simply charity work. Students will be encouraged to make connections between traditional academic coursework, their personal and professional skills, and future goals. Finally, through reflective engagement we will discuss how to best employ our knowledge and skills in ways that benefit the efforts of our campus community and the community at large to aid those in need.

COLLEGE TO CAREER: PLAN NOW, SUCCEED LATER

This FlashTopic will focus on helping students to identify and use tools and resources to make choices throughout their college careers that will help them succeed when they graduate and begin their professional careers. It may seem counterintuitive to do this at the very beginning of college but that is absolutely the best time to do so. This includes identifying the questions students should ask, how to seek answers to those questions and then how to take action to make it happen. Through activities and resources, students will look into issues such as: Does my desired profession pay well and have a good future? What courses and majors should I be taking? What can I expect from employers during interviews as I seek a job after graduation? What activities and experiences should I get during school to make myself attractive to future employers?

HEALTHY BEGINNINGS

This FlashTopic will enhance students’ knowledge of the six different dimensions of wellness (physical, spiritual, social, emotional, occupational, and intellectual) and how to effectively manage all dimensions during the transition to college. Students will explore each dimension through hands on activities, readings and campus activities. The dimension of physical fitness and how it relates to the overall development of wellness will be the main focus.
