Next Steps for New Transfer Students

Welcome to Kent State University at Stark!

If you are a new transfer student, follow these steps to become a student at Kent State Stark:

1. COMPLETE PLACEMENT TESTING (if required)

English & Reading Placement
If you have successfully completed college-level English composition at a previous institution, you may receive transfer credit and placement testing in this subject may not be necessary. If you have questions about transfer credit for English courses on your previous college transcript, contact the Office of Student Services at 330-244-3251.

If you have not successfully completed college-level English composition at a previous institution, your English composition and reading course placements will be determined by your ACT subscores in those areas.

However, if any of the following apply to you:

  • Your ACT test was taken more than two years ago;
  • You never took the ACT;
  • You weren't required to submit the ACT as part of your admission requirements;

You will need to go to the Academic Success Center to take placement testing in English composition and reading. Visit Testing Services for more information.

Math Placement
If you have successfully completed college-level math at a previous institution, you may receive transfer credit and placement testing in math may not be necessary. If you have questions about transfer credit for math courses on your previous college transcript, contact the Office of Student Services at 330-244-3251.

If you have not successfully completed college-level math at a previous institution, you may be required to take the online ALEKS math placement assessment, which will determine your math course placement. The ALEKS math placement assessment is taken through FlashLine and can be taken at home or in the Academic Success Center if you choose. ALEKS should take 60-90 minutes to complete.

Note: Developmental English or math courses are not considered college-level coursework.

2. MEET WITH AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR

Once any required placement assessments are completed, you will need to meet with an academic advisor to determine your course schedule. During your advising appointment, your advisor will discuss your English composition, reading and math course placements, explain transfer credit, review Kent Core requirements and explain your major requirements. Appointments can be made online or you can call 330-244-3251.

3. REGISTER YOUR CLASSES

After you meet with an academic advisor, you will be able to register for your classes through FlashLine. Your advisor will give you instructions on how to do this at your advising appointment.

4. PAY YOUR TUITION

To view tuition and payment deadlines, go to FlashLine > My Account > My Student Account. Tuition invoices are emailed to your Kent State email address. Invoices are not mailed to your home address.
  • View your financial aid awards in FlashLine > My Account > My Student Account

5. ATTEND NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

Plan to attend Smart Start Saturday for new fall students, Smart Start Spring for new spring students, or elect to view an online orientation if you can't attend an in-person orientation.

6. GET YOUR FLASHCARD

The Kent State FLASHcard is more than just a student ID. It can be used as debit account to purchase books, supplies and clothing in the Bookstore or purchase food in the Emporium. It is required to check out materials from the Library, pay for printing in the computer labs and to use the Recreation & Wellness Center. Get your FLASHcard in the Office of Student Services. A current photo ID such as a driver’s license or state issued ID is required.

7. BUY YOUR BOOKS

You can buy your books online and in-person at our campus Bookstore.
