Annual Graduated Student Survey

This survey collects information from students approximately 12-18 months following graduation from Kent State University. Questions center on quality of instruction, quality of services, current employment status, etc.

Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)
The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) collects data about entering college students' high school academic and co-curricular experiences, as well as their expectations for participating in educationally purposeful activities during the first college year. BCSSE administration usually takes place prior to start of fall classes and is designed to be paired with a NSSE administration at the end of the first college year, providing an in-depth understanding of first-year student engagement on your campus.

BCSSE data can aid the design of pre-college orientation programs, student service initiatives, and other programmatic efforts aimed at improving student learning during the first year of college. BCSSE results, especially when linked with NSSE data, can be used to shape initiatives that align the first-year experience of students with recognized effective educational practices.  

BCSSE results may be used in many ways including recruitment, assessment and improvement, curricular reform, academic advising, retention, faculty development, accreditation and self-studies, and first-year program evaluation 

Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA)

The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) is a discipline-independent measure of an institution's contribution to the development of key higher order competencies, such as critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem solving, and effective communication.Unlike most standardized exams, which typically are in multiple-choice format, the CLA taps into higher order skills by requiring students to demonstrate through essays their ability to reflect on problems and solve tasks.

Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE)

The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) is a project coordinated by the national Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at Indiana University, Bloomington.  FSSE is designed to measure faculty expectations of student engagement in educational practices that are empirically linked with high levels of learning and development.  The survey also collects information about how faculty members spend their time related to professorial activities and the kinds of learning experiences their institution emphasizes.

FSSE results can be used to identify areas of institutional strength, as well as aspects of the undergraduate experience, that may warrant attention.  The information is intended to be a catalyst for productive discussions related to teaching, learning, and the quality of students’ educational experiences.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has been collecting data from students at four year colleges and universities around the country since 2000 to assess the extent to which students engage in educationally effective activities.  The guiding premise is that student participation in these activities at reasonable levels is a meaningful proxy for collegiate quality.  Student Engagement is reported through questions centering on college activities, institutional environments, student satisfaction, course emphasis and educational programs, community service and volunteerism, arts, wellness and spirituality, time on task, educational and personal growth, and reflective learning.
