Asking for scholarship recommendations
Recommendation letters play an important part in determining how others view you. It is your responsibility to select the most appropriate individuals to support and advocate for you. Select individuals you interact with often and who are familiar with your talents, successes and abilities. When approaching someone for recommendations always be respectful of their time and schedules and be polite.
• Be outgoing. Ask your teachers, counselors, coaches, and community leaders.If they are familiar with you they will be glad to assist you if given the time and resources from you that they need.
• Provide them with the recommendation form completed with your information. Also, if needed, supply them with information of awards, volunteering, outside community activities or pertinent information that they may not know to provide a well rounded outlook.
• Make sure they have plenty of time so they can formulate their thoughts and get it back to you. Allowing for two weeks before your due date to submit your application provides the time they need.
• Follow up within a week prior to the deadline you established with them to see if they need additional information.
