Dear Ed--

I'm going into my second semester at City College and I'm planning on taking Math because I'm thinking about moving into a science major, but I was placed into a very low-level math class and I know it will be review for me. I have taken Algebra and Precalculus in high school and I know that if I studied a little that I could do much better than I did on the placement exams. I hadn't studied at all before those tests--my fault entirely--but I don't want to spend a year relearning math that I already know. What do you suggest?

--Looking for Math exemptions

Dear Looking--

The first place you are going to want to go is the Math Department, located in the North Academic Center, Room 8/133. Students can earn exemption credit in any Mathematics course by taking an exemption examination arranged by the Assistant Chair's office. Exemption from the course is awarded for a grade of 70 or above; credit is granted for a grade of 80 or above. So, if you do study you could get placed into the level of Math where you belong and earn a couple of credits along the way.
