Olin Shivers Joins the CCIS Faculty

The College is pleased to welcome Olin Shivers to the faculty. Olin received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon in 1991and comes to Northeastern University from Georgia Tech where he was an associate professor in the College of Computing. Shivers is one of the most visible researchers in programming languages and software engineering. His addition to the faculty significantly raises Northestern's already internationally acclaimed status in this critical research area.

Many people consider his 1992 dissertation on the static analysis of programs one of the major breakthroughs in the area. His early papers on static program analysis count among the most widely cited publications. A large number of academic and commercial compilers use the ideas from Shivers’ dissertation. Over the 1990s, Shivers produced scsh, the first command shell for computers in a functional programming language. People study the design of this command shell all over the world and extract ideas for software engineering applications. Recently, Shivers has contributed many novel ideas to the world of programming language design as well as to the advancement of program analysis, his original invention.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Shivers has significant industrial experience. He contributed to Greenspun's Arts Digita MIT spin-off and founded SmartLeaf, which assists investors with the tax-efficient management of security portfolios.
