Doctor Barzilay's research focuses on programming languages, formal languages, and reflection.

In his work with the PLT Scheme research group, he has designed a foreign interface to PLT Scheme, and a Lazy Scheme language that is identical to Scheme except for its execution semantics. He substantially revised the PLT build process and web page generation. In addition, he extended the PLT Handin server and client, making it usable in courses with widely varying demands.

Prior to earning his PhD, he was one of the first programmers at Gefen-Dekel, the software development branch of Dalet Digital Media Systems, where he developed multimedia applications for Windows aimed at radio station software and advertisement management.
