Professor Baclawski engages in research and consulting concerned with ontology based computing, including research in the Semantic Web and formal methods for software engineering.

Professor Baclawski has been involved in the development of the Semantic Web since it started. The Semantic Web is a layer above the World Wide Web that understands the meaning of information and can make valid inferences about it. He is actively involved in applying ontologies in many domains, including the health sciences, wireless networks and decision support tools.

Professor Baclawski has published extensively in such journals and conferences as the National Academy of Science, Information Systems, the International Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology, the Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing, the International Semantic Web Conference and the Ontolog Community. He has served on numerous peer review panels for the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health, and the Association for Computing Machinery. He has also served on various program committees of research conferences. He serves as a consultant to companies and government laboratories, and has edited and written several books and research monographs.
