Computational devices are ubiquitous in modern society, and the more they can be “taught” to respond to human needs, the greater their potential to improve lives. Northeastern’s artificial intelligence (AI) group focuses on developing intelligent computer systems with particular emphasis on health informatics, natural language processing, and machine learning.

The AI group is highly collaborative, working with researchers in fields from biology to law. Within the College of Computer and Information Science, the group works closely with researchers in information retrieval, data-mining, and human-computer interaction.

Team Achievements

  • Developed tools to characterize and extract knowledge from biomedical literature, including the graphs and images that are critical parts of most biomedical research papers;
  • Created an animated virtual nurse that educates hospital patients about their health conditions and post-discharge self-care, encourages people to exercise and take their medications as prescribed, and uses natural language processing to simulate face-to-face conversations between patients and health professionals;
  • Developed legal ontologies to support legal planning and document drafting systems;
  • Created relational agents developed using technology testbeds for human-machine dialogs;
  • Participated in key conferences including the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law (ICAIL).
