Ten Clarion University faculty members were promoted and 10 received tenure during the 2009 Faculty Promotion and Tenure Recognition held in Carlson Library's Center for Academic Excellence.

The program recognizes faculty who have been promoted to full professor or associate professor, and those who have received tenure. In honor of their recognition, each faculty member is invited to choose a book or other work that has made an impact in their lives, or that they feel will make an impact in someone else's, and those books are dedicated to the Carlson Library or Suhr Library collections.

"This is an opportunity to celebrate you and celebrate this university," said Clarion University President Joseph Grunenwald during his remarks. "The values of Clarion University are shown in our behavior and your achievements say this is good, this is us.

"When I received my tenure I felt that now I had to really go to live up to that tenure or promotion. All of it mattered more to me after the tenure. I did my best work after that final promotion because it meant so much to me. You have all gotten to a place of excellence and we see it in this room."

Dr. Laurie Occhipnti, president of Clarion University Faculty Senate, provided a colleague's perspective in her remarks. "I am very happy to thank you for the work you do endlessly," she said. "We don't pat ourselves on the back often enough for what we do. Tenure and promotion reflect the remarkable work you do in scholarship, teaching, and service. We thank you for all you do."

"Knowledge is power," said Provost Valentine James in his opening remarks. "You have reached a point of excellence and done something to celebrate. Thank you for your passion for teaching, researching, and sharing knowledge."
