C.E. Charlie Littlejohn

Charles Edward Littlejohn, Jr.
Dr. Charles Edward Littlejohn, Jr., also known as Charlie or Doc Charlie, served the Chemical Engineering Department from 1947 to 1975. He was held in such high regard because he was such a great influence on so many students over the years.

C.E. Littlejohn was born on September 28, 1918 in Spartanburg, SC. He received his B.S. in Chemistry-Engineering from Clemson College in 1940; his M.S. from NC State in 1941; and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 1952.

From 1942 to 1946, Littlejohn served in the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer. He joined the Clemson Chemical Engineering faculty in 1947 as an Assistant professor and became Department Chairman in 1956. Often, Dr. Littlejohn had to teach many of the courses because he was either the only faculty member or one of few. According to former students, Dr. Littlejohn was an excellent instructor. He always reflected a sincere concern for his students, their problems, and their educational development. His focus was professionalism; it was the center of all that he communicated and demonstrated to his students.

In the mid-1950's, Littlejohn was intrigued by nuclear power; he took graduate courses in nuclear technology. He also developed contacts at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and in 1954, 17 students took a field trip to ORNL. A new course was developed, "Introduction to Nuclear Energy."

Once the masters and doctoral programs were introduced into the Chemical Engineering curriculum in the early 1960's, Dr. Littlejohn was determined to make both the undergraduate and graduate programs reflect the needs of the industry. According to Dr. Littlejohn, "A differential equation never built a distillation column." He believed that research should be used to enhance a person's expertise.

Some of Littlejohn's professional activities include Chairman of the Western South Carolina Section of AIChE, Faculty Advisor to the Student AIChE Chapter, member of AIChE-ECPD Accreditation Committee, Chairman of the Chemical Engineering Division of ASEE, and Chairman of the Publication Board of CEE. In 1970, Dr. Littlejohn was selected as Man of the Year of the Western South Caorlina Section of AIChE.
