HIST 1110-Civilization: Past and Present-(3 Credits)
A survey of the historical, cultural, political, and economic forces and events that shaped human history from the first hominids to the dawn of the “Age of Discovery” in 1500. Topics covered in this course include the development of agriculture, the first river valley civilizations, the classical civilizations of the Americas and Eurasia, the origins and development of Christianity and Islam, and the beginning of the “Age of Discovery”, marked by Columbus’ rediscovery of the Americas. This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the course of and general themes in human history to 1500. This course also provides students with opportunities to hone their analytical thinking and writing skills. In addition, this course exposes students to the methods employed by historians in their investigations of the past and provides them with chances to do their own historical research and writing.(F,S)
HIST 1120-Civilizations: Past and Present-(3 Credits)
A survey of the historical, cultural, political, and economic forces and events that have shaped human history since 1500. Topics covered in this course include the “Age of Discovery”; the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment; the
American, French, and Industrial Revolutions; the rise of the West and the decline of the western and central Asian Muslim land empires and dynastic China; global imperialism; the two world wars and the Cold War; and globalization. This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the course of and general themes in human history since 1500. This course also provides students with opportunities to hone their analytical thinking and writing skills. In addition, this course exposes students to the methods employed by historians in their investigations of the past and provides them with chances to do their own historical research and writing.(F,S)
HIST 2010-American History- (3 Credits)
A survey of the historical, cultural, political, and economic forces and events that shaped United States history from the early settlement of the Americas to the Reconstruction era, 1877. Topics include discovery and colonization, Revolutionary War, the Constitution and early Republic, Westward Expansion, Sectionalism, and the Civil War. The course is designed to provide students an understanding of the basic facts and general themes in American history and clarify perceptions of the past. The course will also encourage students to practice effective writing skills and expose them to the historical process of analytical research and writing. HIST 2020-American History-(3 Credits)
A survey of the historical, cultural, political, and economic forces and events that shaped United States history from 1877 to the present. Topics include industrialization, progressivism, World War I and II, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. The course is designed to provide students an understanding of the basic facts and general themes in American history and clarify perceptions of the past. The course will also encourage students to practice effective writing skills and expose them to the historical process of analytical research and writing. This course is a continuation of HIST 2010, however the course does not have to be taken in sequence. (F, S) (video and online course offered Spring)
HIST 2030-Tennessee History-(3 Credits)
A survey of the historical, cultural, political, and economic forces and events that have shaped the history of Tennessee from prehistoric times to the present. Topics covered in this course include people in Tennessee up to the arrival of the first Europeans, the colonial period, the events leading to Tennessee’s admission to the Union, the development of the Volunteer State before the Civil War, the Civil War and Reconstruction, Tennessee in the New South, the impact of the two world wars and the Great Depression on the Volunteer State, and the development of the state since World War II. This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the course of and general themes in Tennessee history. This course also provides students with opportunities to hone their analytical thinking and writing skills. In addition, this course exposes students to the methods employed by historians in their investigations of the past and provides them with chances to do their own historical research and writing.(Upon request.)
