Centers & Major Initiatives

NSF/DOE - (CURENT), The Center for Ultra-wide-area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks is a multi-university National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center, jointly supported by NSF and the Department of Energy. Its mission is to build a more reliable, secure and efficient electric grid transmission system that uses renewable energy sources.

NSF - (CenSSIS), The Bernard M. Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems is a multi-university National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center.  Its mission is to revolutionize detection of biomedical and environmental-civil objects or conditions that are underground, underwater, or embedded within cells or inside the human body.

DHS - (ALERT), Awareness and Localization of Explosives-Related Threats, is a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence that is conducting transformational research and technology development for effective detection, mitigation and response to the explosives related threats facing the nation.

NIH - (PROTECT), Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats, an NIH P42 program, is a collaboration of experts in engineering, public health, and biomedical and environmental sciences, with the dual goal of reducing exposure to environmental contamination and reducing the preterm birth rate in Puerto Rico and beyond.

NIST - (VOTERS), The Center for Versatile Onboard Traffic Embedded Roaming Sensors is developing new multi-sensor technology systems for cars and trucks that will allow for real-time assessment of road and bridge infrastructure across the country.

NSF - (CHOT), The Center for Health Organization Transformation is a multi-university healthcare systems engineering research center partnered with Texas A&M University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and over 4 dozen leading hospitals to develop systems engineering solutions to broad problems throughout health care.

VHA - (NEHCEP), The New England Healthcare Engineering Partnership, a Department of Veterans Affairs Engineering Resource Center, is developing and applying systems and industrial engineering methods similar to those used successfully in automotive and other industries to create efficient, safe, effective, and reliable health care processes.

NSA - (IIA), The Institute for Information Assurance is developing cross-disciplinary methodologies to provide robust and reliable transmission of physically distributed information.

NSF - (CHN), The Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing is developing tools and processes to enable high-rate/high-volume bottom-up, precise assembly of nanoelements (such as carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles) and polymer nanostructures.

The Systems Modeling And Radio Technology (SMART) Laboratory is a partnership between Northeastern University and Mathworks to develop cutting edge research and innovative curricula in a variety of areas related to technical and scientific computing, heterogeneous processing, simulation and model-based design.

The George J. Kostas Nanoscale Technology and Manufacturing Research Center is the primary facility for micro and nanofabrication at Northeastern University.

The Center for Nano and Microcontamination Control’s goal is to develop state-of-the-art techniques for micro and nanoscale contaminant control, mitigation, removal and characterization in manufacturing and fabrication processes.

The Center for Microwave Magnetic Materials and Integrated Circuits (CM3IC) combines multidisciplinary expertise to develop novel microwave magnetic materials and device solutions for use in microwave electronics and multifunctional integrated circuits.

The Communications and Digital Signal Processing (CDSP) Center is a hub of research and graduate education in the areas of communications, digital signal & image processing, and dynamics & control systems.

The Institute of Complex Scientific Software (ICSS) is working to dramatically improve the ways in which a broad range of software expertise can be combined with groundbreaking scientific applications.

The Center for Urban Environmental Studies promotes research concerning the sustainability of urbanization and environmental health.
