Allied Health Department Overview

Exciting things continue to happen at the department!  We would like to welcome Deb Nittler and Jeff Fluty to the department.  Deb is a longtime Cowley employee who has held many different positions at the college such as Assistant Athletic Director, faculty teacher and Department Chair.  She will continue to teach health and athletic courses.  Jeff Fluty is the Athletic Trainer for the college and remains very busy with that position.  He will continue to teach within the sports medicine program that has been moved to this department.  Both are great educators and professionals who add further depth and breadth to this department.  Each are exploring other programs that will likely be offered at the college – stay tuned for more good things to come!

Late in the spring semester, thanks to outstanding work completed by Rae Dale and JoLynne Stalnaker, the Kansas Board of Regents approved the modification of several existing programs.  Now, Cowley is able to offer certificates and/or AAS degrees for medical coding, medical transcription and medical office support.  If you have ever wanted to enter the healthcare field and really didn’t want to have direct patient contact, these highly-in-demand programs may be for you.  Full information about each can be found on our website.

Have you ever thought about working in a laboratory to draw blood samples and then completing a full analysis?  If that interests you, please contact Slade Griffiths for more information.

We are happy to announce an articulation partnership with Southwestern College in Winfield to provide further education so our EMS Leadership, MICT, Coding and Transcription graduates can complete their bachelor degrees in approximately eighteen months.  We have enclosed more information about this exciting partnership.

CNA and Related Education

On June 15th Janet Bogle, Nursing Coordinator, and all adjunct instructors met for an in-service day.  Changes that will occur in fall classes were discussed.  One change will be that instructors will no longer collect KDHE application fees from students, as those fees will be added to course fees collected during enrollment.

New instructors Jereen Hoss and Julie Kirkbride were introduced and welcomed to the department. Jereen currently teaches a CMA class in Mulvane and plans to teach 2 CNA classes in the fall.  Julie will teach a CNA class in Winfield.   We look forward to working with Jereen and Julie.

A break out session was instrumental in developing syllabi which better explain requirements and policies of the CMA and CNA courses.  Janet will provide a syllabus template that includes essential information.

After much discussion it was decided unanimously to stop using the current text for CMA classes and use the Kansas State Curriculum for Certified Medication Aides along with current resources to provide the information for teaching.  This will be reviewed during the next year to see if there is a suitable text that helps prepare students for the state exam and for working in the healthcare setting.  Janet Bogle and Linda Voth reviewed a new textbook that is scheduled to be available in the fall of 2008 which seems to be a good selection.

Through aggressive marketing there has been an increase in the number of CMA recertification students over the past eight months with all scheduled classes being filled and two additional classes being offered.  It was decided to offer these classes every month during 2008.  We will continue to advertise and monitor enrollment.  Since several students have enrolled beyond the deadline date for these classes, effective in August there will be a fee of $25.00 added for those choosing to enroll after the deadline.

EMS Education

Overview
Cowley College has had a nationally-accredited MICT program for many years and we recently had a re-accreditation site visit.  As with the initial accreditation, to meet Kansas Board of EMS requirements that were adopted in 2001, we found the process enjoyable and beneficial.  Although the results of the site visit are not yet official, we are confident that our program was found to be one of excellence and continuing accreditation will be granted.  We would like to thank the hundreds of people associated with the program at the college, community, hospitals and EMS/FD organizations, and also our students, graduates, medical advisors and advisory committee.  We are successful due, in large part, to the support we receive from all these fine people and organizations.

Several employees from the EMS division have received honors or promotions that we would like to share.  Chris Cannon, Lead MICT Instructor, graduated with his master’s degree in leadership from Southwestern College.  Also, he was one of only three employees at the college to receive the prestigious Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development.  “This year we chose three because all three individuals were all so absolutely outstanding,” Cowley Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs Sheree Utash said. “All three have contributed so much to the college, in and out of the classroom.  They are each outstanding educators that make decisions based on what is best for the student.”  Craig Isom, who is an EMS Lab Assistant/Clinical Coordinator and adjunct faculty member of the allied health department, was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant at Winfield Area EMS.  Brandon Russell, Lab Assistant/Clinical Coordinator, was recently promoted to the Assistant Director position at Butler County EMS.  Mr. Russell also serves on the Cowley EMS Advisory Committee.  We are all very proud of these Cowley MICT graduates and employees.

Graduates of the 2006 daytime MICT program are all certified and employed in the EMS field at Butler County EMS, Clearwater EMS, Sedgwick County EMS or Winfield Area EMS.  We congratulate each of them for this great accomplishment.

The EMS division has added many new Lab Assistants/Clinical Coordinators to meet the needs of our students.  We are proud to announce that Chris Atwater, Matt Creighton, Paul Misasi, Deryk Ruddle, Brian Schmidt, Aaron Sutton and Josh Whiteside are all employees at the college.  Their bios can be found at   http://www.cowley.edu/ departments/allied/ems/faculty.html.

We are excited that the EMS Leadership degree starts this fall.  We truly feel that this online leadership degree will positively affect the profession for many years.  If you are a Cowley MICT graduate, we are offering a three credit hour scholarship to you as a ‘thanks’ for attending our school – contact Slade for more information.

If you are considering either the daytime (Winfield) or evening (Andover) MICT programs that start in January 2008, now is the time to apply.  We will be conducting the selection process in late July.

Tactical Classes
Cowley will offer its fourth Basic Tactical EMS Operations course on September 8th and 9th. Participants in this class will learn basic tactical emergency medical care fundamentals such as care under fire, team tactics, and sensory deprived assessment. Tactical vests, handcuffs, replica firearms and EMS kits will be provided during the course for all participants. The class will have a classroom component and an exciting hands-on portion where students will function as a tactical team and apply their new tactical EMS skills. This course is a prerequisite for the Advanced Tactical EMS Operations course.

The Advanced Tactical EMS Operations course will be offered on September 29th and 30th. This class will build on the skills taught in the basic course, and an emphasis on field operations and application of skills under stress is utilized. This course culminates in the students functioning as tactical EMS providers while conducting mock raids on several different on-campus and off-campus buildings and residences. During the field operations portion of class, students must plan the raid, execute the raid (including providing on-scene EMS care), and debrief the team after the raid is completed. These classes are very popular offerings, so please be sure to enroll soon. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Cannon at 620-229-5985.

Cowley Paramedic 2006-07 Evening Class
We are very proud to announce that twelve students from the evening MICT program recently completed their field internship rotations, the Advanced EMS Care class, and passed the program final written and practical examinations

After completing the MICT program, the students then challenged the National Registry practical exam for certification, and will complete the computer based written test in the near future. This group of students was the first entire MICT class that tested under the new computer-adaptive-testing that has been adopted by the National Registry for EMT-Paramedic testing.

The successful completers of the 2006-2007 Evening MICT Program are:

Jared Smith, a student in the evening MICT program, was recently deployed with his army unit to the Middle East, where he serves as a combat medic. He is still in the MICT program, and will complete his field internship after he returns from his combat tour. Our thoughts and prayers go with Jared.

We would like to thank our staff instructors, field preceptors, local EMS services, hospitals, physicians, nurses, other hospital staff members, and everyone else that assisted with the evening MICT Program. We greatly appreciate everyone that made this program a success.

EMS Leadership Program
The first ever classes for the EMS Leadership degree program will be offered during the 2007 Fall semester.  We are very excited to offer this unique program to EMS professionals, and we feel that it will help bridge the gap from initial EMS courses of instruction to the knowledge needed to become a true EMS leader. The prehospital care environment is continually changing and becoming more complex each day.  Our dedicated faculty will provide you with the tools you need to be successful in this challenging environment, both today and in the future.  Fall 2007 classes:

LED1448

Introduction to Leadership

LED1449

Organizational Leadership

LED1451

Financial Management

LED1452

Educational Practice and Theory for the Leader

All courses will be offered online, and will only last an intense eight weeks.  Classes are filling quickly, so be sure to enroll soon.  If you have any questions, please contact Chris Cannon at 620-229-5985.

Cowley Paramedic 2007 Day Class
After successfully completing didactic education, the students from the day class are participating in their clinical experience.  These students have successfully been certified in PALS, PEPP and NRP.  Later this summer they will be taking PHTLS and ACLS.  We are proud of the positive comments we are receiving from the performance of these students from each of the clinical areas.

We appreciate the experiences they are being allowed at the Via Christi facilities, William Newton Hospital in Winfield, South Central Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City, Cedarvale Clinic, Sedan Hospital and the Kansas Medical Center in Andover.  We are looking forward to seeing them excel in field internship starting in the fall.

Pratt-Cowley ADN Program at Winfield

The first nursing students who started this program at Cowley have taken their licensure examinations.  The results of their testing have been excellent and we are very proud of each of them and Pratt Community College.

Tracy Bergagnini has been promoted to the Pratt Nursing Program Coordinator position at the Winfield site.  Tracy has many years of experience as a nurse, leader and educator.  We welcome her to this position.

Jonny Thompson was recently hired by Pratt Community College as an instructor at the Winfield campus. Jonny has taught as an adjunct for Cowley Allied Health for several years and we look forward to working with her in this new position.

Pratt and Cowley are discussing the possibility of providing a bridge program for the MICT to RN.  If interested in this type of education and training, please call Joyce Holloway so that we can send additional information as it becomes available.

TEAS testing may be scheduled by calling the Allied Health office at 620.221.3392.

Long Term Adult Health Care Administrator

Opportunities as a licensed Adult Care Home Administrator have never been better. Cowley’s program is one of the oldest and most popular in the state. Instruction fulfills standards set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). We are also in the process of gaining KDHE approval to provide administrator continuing education classes that cover the ‘administration’ requirement for re-licensure.  Licensed administrators throughout Kansas should really be happy with what we are developing.  Stay tuned for more exciting information that concerns this new venture.

Contact Bruce Irwin at 800.296.3633 or Slade Griffiths for more information about the program or continuing education.
