The Math and Science Club of Cowley College will seek to promote student interest in the disciplines of mathematics and science and to enrich learning opportunities in mathematics and science throughout the college and community through extra curricular activities.

2012 Bridge Design Contest Winners

2012 Bridge Winners
Using resources provided by the West Point Academy, Cowley College Math & Science Club sponsored a "local bridge design contest" March 1 through April 15.

The Cowley College students submitting the lowest cost load baring designs during the duration of the contest were eligible for the prizes as well as (and maybe more important) Bragging Rights.

Students take part in Math and Science Day

For the second straight year, close to 100 students took part in the Math and Science Day events at Cowley College. A total of 105 students and sponsors from nine area high schools took part in Wednesday’s event on the school’s main campus in Arkansas City. read more View photo gallery.

Zoo Trip
Night at the Zoo

On October 17th, the Math and Science Club went on a Nocturnal Adventure at the Sedgwick County Zoo

The adventure included a night at the zoo, guided tours, games, an animal encounter, a flashlight tour, movie and a bedtime snack. A variety of animals were seen including hedgehogs, snakes, chinchillas and lions.

Activities and Events for Spring

The Math and Scinece Club in Mulvane had their end of semester BBQ. They had Black Angus Burgers, Nuerenberger Brats, Pulled Pork, and Sauerkraut. The students enjoyed one more relaxing moment in the sun before jumping into finals week.

MU ALPHA THETA
(Community College Mathematics Honor Society)

Mu Alpha Theta is a national community college mathematics club. It's major purpose is to promote greater interest in mathematics and give recognition for excellence in mathematics performance by community college students. Membership in Mu Alpha Theta is limited to those students who have excelled in mathematics and met the minimum standard for membership.

Membership in Mu Alpha Theta is an asset to a student's record and resume. It is a way to recognize capable math students, as well as to enhance the mathematics instruction of the institution. In addition , when you join , you will automatically become a member of , the Cowley Math & Science Club, however you are under no obligation to be an active member of Math & Science Club

In order to cover membership dues and initiation fees, there is a one-time membership fee of $40.00.

Eighteen Members Inducted at Spring Ceremony

Mu Theta Theta 2012

Pictured are five of eighteen members inducted into Mu Alpha Theta Membership on March 1, 2012.

Cowley College chapter of Mu Alpha Theta held a spring induction ceremony on Thursday, March 1. 

After welcome and introductions by Michelle Schoon, Natural Science Department Chairperson, Sue Saia, Vice President of Student Affairs, addressed the group with a humorous look at “mathletes” and congratulated the students on their achievement. 

Club sponsors, Martin Shaffer and Steve Cooper, and math instructor April Nittler, helped in the initiation ceremony. 

Eighteen students received membership certificates and pins from the National Chapter.  (Melinda Boone, Patrick Curl, Bethany Dillard, Hannah Dillard, Kaitlin Ford, Melissa Grant, Dakota Grote, Joseph Mancine, Joseph Marks, Cody McNulty, Emily Miller, Jody Newman, Justin Parton, Sveta Poovey, Caroline Strickland, Chris Turner, Mark Wagner, Desiree Weakly)

Mu Alpha Theta is an honorary math society for high school and two-year colleges.  Student qualify for membership by receiving an A in college algebra or a B in a higher level math course.
