If you love to express yourself through writing
Choose Cowley College
Cowley encourages students to develop their creative writing skills as a form of self-expression and a means of communicating emotions, ideas, history, and perception of the world and the human condition.
The creative writing program provides opportunities for original compositions in various genres: poetry, short stories, non-fiction features, children's literature, dramas, and character sketches. Some students may even investigate potential publication of their best work in literary venues.

Writers' Corners, sponsored by Creative Claws writing club, give students a venue for sharing their creative works.

Meet Marlys Cervantes
Humanities Department Chairperson; Instructor: Creative Writing, Composition, Literature

Marlys Cervantes has been expanding programs at Cowley College since she began teaching here in 2000. It started with the basic English area and then moved on to additional literature courses and now creative writing ones. She strives to bring to the students what fits their needs in a way that encourages them to succeed in both education and life.

Cervantes’ newest endeavors are expanding the creative writing program, beginning Creative Claws writing club, and serving as co-director for the Multicultural Scholars Program. Much of her time is spent supporting her students outside of the classroom; she considers herself to be their biggest fan.

Some of the honors that recognize her dedication to her students are that she was named Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence and Student Learning in 2005-06,  Tiger Booster of the Year 2004, and has been presented Master Teacher and Master Presenter  awards.

Cervantes is a graduate of Oklahoma State University, where she received both a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Literature, with her emphasis in contemporary Native American literature. She is active in numerous community organizations, such as RAIN Team, Ponca Playhouse, ReACT, and other arts organizations.
