Steps for an I-20

The I-20 is a Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status for those who wish to study in the U.S. The I-20 form must be taken to the American embassy or consulate when you apply for a visa.

New International Students Must:

1. Complete an Application for Admission - Click here!
Fill out and submit an application for admission preferably at least thee months before the start of the term in which you wish to enroll (unless you are transferring from another institution within the USA).

2. Provide Transcripts
Submit an official copy of your high school (secondary school) academic transcripts with an English translation of the grades and grading scale. Transcript MUST have leaving/graduation date.

3. Diploma
Submit an official copy of high school diploma.

4. Show English Proficiency
Submit evidence of English language proficiency. Students must meet one of the following criteria to demonstrate proficiency:

  1. Obtain a satisfactory score on the TOEFL test. Internet Based (iBT) = 61, Paper-based (PBT) = 500, Computer Based (CBT) = 173.  Cowley's TOEFL code is 6008.

  2. TSE (Test of Spoken English) score of 4 or higher.

  3. A minimum IELTS ( International English Language Testing System) score of 5.0. http://www.ielts.org
    "IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations."

  4. Have attended and graduated from an American high school within the United States and have maintained a minimum 2.0 CGPA (cumulative grade point average).

5. Submit an Affidavit of Sponsorship - Download
Submit a completed "Affidavit of Sponsorship" form which you may obtain from the Admissions Office. You must demonstrate that you, or your sponsor, are able to cover tuition, fees, books, housing, travel, and miscellaneous personal expenses while here in this country. The Affidavit of Sponsor form must be submitted with a seal from the sponsor's bank. 

6. Carry Current Health Insurance
Per college policy, all full-time international students are required to carry Cowley's health insurance, from Student Assurance Services, while students are at Cowley College. The cost of the health insurance policy will be billed automatically each semester to the students account.  For specific details about this insurance plan please contact Student Assurance Services at (316) 686-3373 or (800) 245-0486.

7. International Tuition Payments
Upon receiving their VISA, international students who do not have a Cowley College scholarship offer will be required to pay their first semester in full prior to arriving to Cowley College.   Scholarship students shall make appropriate payment arrangements according to their scholarship agreement.   Each subsequent semester will require payment before the student returns to attend classes.  Failure to remit payment by the due date will result in termination of the students’ VISA.

Transfer Students Must: (those who have previously attended a different US college)

1. Complete an Application for Admission - Click here!

Submit an official copy of your academic transcripts with an English translation of the grades and grading scale.  We will need copies of both high school and college transcripts. Be aware your college transcript must be mailed directly from your previous college to Cowley.

3. Diploma
Submit an official copy of high school diploma.

4. Show English Proficiency
Transfer students may demonstrate English proficiency by either of the methods listed below:

If you are transferring to Cowley from a school within the USA, you must provide proof that you are currently in status with no pending INS issues and do not owe money to any American college.
