Cowley College awards 71 scholarships to students from 29 schools
The Student Services Department at Cowley College has awarded scholarships to the following students.
From Arkansas City High School:
- Caitlynn McVey, daughter of John and Jeannette McVey, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At ACHS, she was involved in FFA, Usherettes, cross country, basketball, softball, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Work Ethic Program, and the National Honor Society. She was a Kansas Honor Scholar, a Wendy’s Heisman finalist, Greenhand degree recipient, Chapter degree recipient, Academic Chapter degree recipient, and a Soroptimist Girl. She plans to major in agriculture.
- Eric Gibson, son of Clark and Lynette Gibson, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At ACHS, he was involved in soccer, track, basketball, School Counts, and the National Honor Society. He is undecided on a major.
- John Rohr, son of Tony and Telisa Rohr, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At ACHS, he participated in tennis, orchestra, 21st Century Leadership, and National Honor Society. He is undecided on a major.
- Samantha Turner, daughter of Jake and Jeri Turner, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in volleyball, basketball, track, band, drumline, SADD, National Honor Society, and School Counts. She was a Kansas Honor Scholar, a member of the Dean’s Honor Roll, Soroptimist Girl, and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. She plans to major in pre-medicine.
- Nicholas Hadorn, son of Paul and Teresa Hadorn, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. He plans to major in automotive.
- Taylor Best, daughter of Rodney Best and Laura Wyatt, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in FFA, cross country, track and field, FCA, and orchestra. She was a member of the Honor Roll and state champions in the dairy food competition. She plans to major in veterinary science.
- Ashley Randel, daughter of Clay and Sandy Randel, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At ACHS, she was involved in FFA, SADD, Debate, AFS, FBLA, and the National Honor Society. She placed second in national floriculture for FFA and plans to major in nursing.
- Alyssa Crain, daughter of Brian and Kelli Crain, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in basketball, volleyball, softball, Student Council, Usherettes, AC Players, School Counts, Multicultural Club, and was the football team manager. She was the recipient of a School Counts Scholarship and was the October Soroptimist Girl. She is undecided on a major.
- Nathaniel Metzinger, son of Billy and Crystal Metzinger, is the recipient of a School Counts Scholarship. At ACHS, he was involved in School Counts, football, and band. He plans to major in education.
- Tonia Garcia, daughter of Antonio and Martha Garcia, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At ACHS, she was involved in School Counts, Work Ethic Program, AFS, Multicultural Club, and was the soccer team manager. She plans to major in accounting.
Paige Traffas, daughter of Richard and Alice Traffas, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At ACHS, she was involved in Debate, band, Forensics, dance, NAC, National Honor Society, and volleyball. She went to state three times in Debate and once for percussion ensemble. She is undecided on a major.
- Isabel Ibarra, daughter of Medardo and Alejandra Ibarra, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in FBLA Multicultural Club, AFS, National Honor Society, and was the soccer team manager. She was a member of the Honor Roll and is undecided on a major.
- Nelly Conde, daughter of Abel and Maria Conde, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At ACHS, she was involved in FBLA, School Counts, French Club, SADD, NSHSS, and was a manager for the soccer team. She was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in nursing.
- Sarah Ripperda, daughter of Duane and Margaret Ripperda, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in School Counts, SADD, AC Players, National Honor Society, and band. She plans to major in medical coding and billing.
- Kathryn Newland, daughter of Stephanie Newland, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in band. She plans to major in biology.
- Valerie Phillips, daughter of Richard and Dean Phillips, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At ACHS, she was involved in FFA, cross country, and softball. She was a member of the Honor Roll and is undecided on a major.
- Alina Vanderveen, daughter of Linda Vanderveen, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in Forensics and Debate. She lettered in academics all four years and received first place in the Keyboarding I competition in Independence. She plans to major in psychology.
- Alyssa Lewis, daughter of Chad and Julie Lewis, is the recipient of an Athletic Hospitality Scholarship. At ACHS, she participated in golf, Arkettes, Choir, FCA, National Honor Society, Kansas Honors, AC Players, Work Ethics, Student Mentor, and was a cheerleader her sophomore and junior years. She was a WSU Presidential Scholar, KSOK Student Athlete, and November 2011 VYPE Student Athlete of the Month. She plans to major in pre-medicine.
- Chelsey Bruce, daughter of Mike and Angie Bruce, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. AT ACHS, she participated in FFA, FBLA, FCA, and the Work Ethics program. She is a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in landscape design.
- David Boxman, son of Mark and Lynn Boxman, is the recipient of a Trustee Scholarship. At ACHS, he participated in basketball, Student Council, FFA, School Counts, and the National Honor Society. He is a WSU Presidential Scholar, Ark City Outstanding Student finalist, KU Honors Scholar, and a Wendy’s Heisman finalist. He is undecided on a major.
From Ark City Christian Academy:
- Shayna Feste, daughter of Gene and Cynde Feste, is the recipient of a Charles Kerr Scholarship. At ACCA, she participated in basketball, volleyball, and soccer. She was a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll, and was an all-league selection in basketball all four years. She plans to major in business administration.
- Sheyann Feste, daughter of Gene and Cynde Feste, is the recipient of a Charles Kerr Scholarship. At ACCA, she was involved in basketball, volleyball, and soccer. She was a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll, and was an all-league basketball player for three years. She plans to major in business administration.
From Winfield High School:
- Taylor Brown, daughter of Steve and Kelly Brown is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At WHS, she participated in basketball, softball, and HOSA. She was a member of the Scholastic Honor Roll and was an all-league softball player. She is undecided on a major.
- Jesseca Green, daughter of Arthur and Kimberly Green, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At WHS, she was involved in cheerleading, Student Council, select choir, SADD, and FCCLA. She plans to major in pre-law.
- Victoria Bailey, daughter of Wade and Norma Bailey, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At WHS, she was involved in the Foreign Cultures Club, FFA, and was a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll and Scholastic Honor Roll. She plans to major in paralegal.
- Jordan McIntire, son of Marcia McIntire, is the recipient of a Duck Dash Scholarship. At WHS, he was involved in band, golf, and track. He plans to major in medical coding.
- John Gropper, son of Jim and Gretchen Gropper, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship. At WHS, he was involved in band and choir. He was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in pre-pharmacy.
From Dexter High School:
- Simon Wise, son of Aaron and Monica Wise, is the recipient of a John and Olive Kappler Scholarship. At Dexter, he participated in band, Science Olympiad, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He plans to major in welding.
From Central-Burden High School:
- Jandi Handlin, daughter of Lance and Sheila Handlin, is the recipient of a Trustee Scholarship. At Central, she was involved in basketball, volleyball, softball, track, National Honor Society, cheerleading, FCA, Student Council, KU Honor Scholar, Superintendent’s Honor Roll, and was the class valedictorian in 2010. She plans to major in business.
From Douglass High School:
- Raylee Wallace, daughter of Rodney and Katherine Wallace, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At Douglass, she was involved in FCA, FCCLA, SADD, National Honor Society, tennis, and KAY’s. She was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in criminal science.
- Warren Taylor, son of Dan and Shawna Taylor, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At Douglass, he was involved in marching band, pep band, and concert band. He was a member of the Honor Roll and is undecided on a major.
- Jagger Nottingham, son of Janet Nottingham, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. He was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in criminal justice.
From Cedar Vale High School:
- Brett Champlin, son of Mike and Kitty Champlin, is the recipient of an Engineering Scholarship. At Cedar Vale, he was involved in football, basketball, baseball, FCA, and the National Honor Society. He was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in engineering.
From Sedan High School:
- Melissa Miller, daughter of John and Sherry Miller, is the recipient of a Trustee Scholarship. At Sedan, she participated in basketball, softball, Student Council, FFA, FCA, 4-H, Letterman’s Club, National Honor Society, Math Team, and Livestock Judging. She participated in the Miss Teen Kansas Scholarship and Recognition Pageant and plans to major in agri-business.
From Wellington High School:
- Tiffany Redford, daughter of Ivan and Marsha Redford, is the recipient of a Carpenter and Vickers Scholarship. At Wellington, she was involved in Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society and Leo Club. She plans to major in accounting.
- Cassi Easterly, daughter of Becky Easterly, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At Wellington, she participated in FFA, Circle of Friends, and softball. She received several awards through her work in FFA and plans to major in animal rehabilitation.
- William Bucher, son of Duane and Amy Bucher, is the recipient of an Instrumental Music Scholarship. At Wellington, he was involved in cross country, basketball, track, band, and BPA. He plans to major in computer animations.
- Tracy Saffell, daughter of Mike and Lori Soffell, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At Wellington, she was in the KU Honors Program, was Mentor of the Year for 2011 juniors, and was in the top 10 percent of her class. She plans to major in criminal justice.
- Kimberly Diver, daughter of Tracy and Paula Diver, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At Wellington, she was involved in SADD and Leadership. She was a KU Honors Scholar and plans to major in Forensic Science.
- Bailey Cornejo, daughter of Barney and Pam Cornejo, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At Wellington, she was involved in softball, tennis, Crusaders of the Stage, and Circle of Friends. She plans to major in nursing.
From Belle Plaine High School:
- Krista Collins, daughter of Shelley Collins, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At Belle Plaine, she participated in SADD, FLC, FCCLA< softball, and the Art Fair. She plans to major in nursing.
- Levi Johannsen, son of Chris Wilson, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. He plans to major in ASE certification.
From Oxford High School:
- Katlyn Stanley, daughter of Sabrina Griffin, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At Oxford, she was involved in track, football, KAY’s and was the football team manager. She plans to major in pre-pharmacy.
- Ashley Gaither, daughter of Ronnie and Amy Gaither, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At Oxford, she was involved in softball and was a member of the Honor Roll. She plans to major in pre-dentistry.
- Colten Cook, son of Nathan and Tricia Cook, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At Oxford, he was involved in Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the National Honor Society. He was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in business management.
- Courtney Hayden, daughter of James Baker and Lisa Carrington, is the recipient of a Rotary Newt Smith Scholarship. At Oxford, she was an office aid and was on the Counselors and Superintendents Honor Rolls. She plans to major in pre-veterinary medicine.
From Mulvane High School:
- Brittany Thiesing, daughter of Mark and Esther Thiesing, is the recipient of a Donald and Wilda Patterson Endowment Scholarship. At Mulvane, she was involved in yearbook and volleyball. She was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in mass communications.
- Mikele Kincaid, daughter of Mickey and Michelle Kincaid, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship. At Mulvane, she participated in KAY’s, SADD, and the National Honor Society. She was a member of the Honor Roll and plans to major in pre-veterinary medicine.
From Rose Hill High School:
- John Laffitte, son of Tammime Laffitte, is the recipient of an Edith and Harry Darby Scholarship. He is undecided on a major.
From Wichita North High School:
- Victor Muniz, son of Rosalinda Medrano, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. He plans to major in criminal justice.
- Brandi Davis, daughter of Alton and Becky Davis, is the recipient of a Hall of Scholars Scholarship. At Wichita North, she participated in track, tennis, volleyball, bowling, theatre, and A.V.I.D. She plans to major in religion.
- Carrie Patton, daughter of Regina Beard, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At Wichita North, she was involved in track and Nu Lites. She was a member of the Honor Roll and a Student of the Month recipient and plans to major in social work or criminal justice.
From Wichita South High School:
- Kyrstin Cunningham, daughter of Jackie Bigley, is the recipient of a Craig D. Newman Memorial Scholarship. At Wichita South, she participated in cross country, track, and DECA. She plans to major in pre-pharmacy.
From Wichita Northwest High School:
- Brittany Roberts, daughter of John and Donna Roberts, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship. At Wichita Northwest, she was involved in track and field, yearbook, and the Conference Council on Youth Ministries. She was a member of the National Honor Society, was a Kansas Honor Scholar, and in the top 10 percent of her graduating class. She plans to major in psychology.
From Derby High School:
- Kelsi Carnes, daughter of Doug and Mindy Carnes, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At Derby, she was involved in softball and DECA. She plans to major in dentistry.
- Benjamin Sterling, son of Todd and Stephanie Sterling, is the recipient of an Eagle Scout Scholarship. At Derby, he participated in soccer, Student Council, tennis, National Honor Society, band, and Spanish. He plans to major in pre-law.
From Clearwater High School:
- Megan Mitchell, daughter of Richard and Melinda Mitchell, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. She plans to major in criminal justice/psychology.
- Lucia Schoenecker, daughter of Daniel and Susan Schoenecker, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. At Clearwater, she was involved in basketball, track, volleyball, Colorguard, and vocal music. She plans to major in education.
- Xiomara Shrewsbury, daughter of Doug Shrewsbury, is the recipient of a Dean‘s Scholarship. At Clearwater, she was involved in basketball, softball, volleyball, SADD, and KAY’s. She plans to major in pre-nursing.
- Shannon Robertson, daughter of Ron and Wanda Robertson, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At Clearwater, she was involved in Forensics and was a teachers’ assistant. She plans to major in elementary education.
From Maize High School:
- Emma Smith, daughter of Elizabeth Dickey, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship. At Maize, she was involved in Bel Canto Choir, Women’s choir, and French Club. She plans to major in music.
From McPherson High School:
- Dalton Clark, son of Jeff and Chris Clark, is the recipient of a Dean’s Scholarship. At McPherson, he was involved in band, football, wrestling, and the International Club. He received all-league honors in football and wrestling and is undecided on a major.

From Goddard High School:
- LeAnn Rooney, daughter of Walter Rooney, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. She plans to major in pre-dental hygiene.
From Baptist Tabernacle School:
- Wilma Bennett, daughter of Robert Bennett (deceased) and Dorothy Lee, is the recipient of a Harold and Mary Lake Scholarship. She plans to major in social work.
From Purcell (OK) High School:
- Chasity Burkett, daughter of C.D. Spires and Nancy Spires, is the recipient of an EA Funk Scholarship. She plans to major in elementary education.
From Home School:
- Angelica Wood, daughter of Charles and Pamela Wood, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship. In high school, she participated in volleyball, softball, and Church Youth Group. She is undecided on a major.
From Cheney High School:
- Alison Akler, daughter of Bill and Kristi Akler, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. At Cheney, she was involved in volleyball, softball, cheerleading, dance, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Friends of Rachel, Green Team, and Student Council. She was an all-league athlete and plans to major in psychology.
From Cornerstone Academy:
- Nicole Maurer, daughter of Randal and Annette Maurer, is the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. She plans to major in secondary education.
From Nuskai Sen Sec School:
- Muhammed Ceesay, son of Mbay Ceesay and Kottey Touray, is the recipient of a George Sybrant Memorial Scholarship. At Nuskai Sen See, he was involved in soccer, Commerce Club, and vice president of Ayev International. He received a Principal’s Merit Award and plans to major in business administration.
From Duncan (OK) High School:
- Ashley Hale, daughter of Bob and Roxana Hale, is the recipient of an Endowment Scholarship. At Duncan, she was involved in Key Club, Spanish Club, Pom Squad, and the National Honor Society. She plans to major in Mass Communications.
From Kingman High School:
- Alison Flickner, daughter of Greg and Gail Flickner, is the recipient of an Instrumental Music Scholarship. At Kingman, she was involved in FCCLA, band, Student Council, yearbook, and 4-H. She was a member of the Honor Roll, and received perfect attendance awards for six semesters. She plans to major in business.
