Programs showcased during second annual BCIT Day
BCIT
Sixty-one students, representing seven high schools, were in attendance for the second annual Business Computer and Information Technology Day Tuesday at Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City.
High Schools represented were: Arkansas City, Community Learning Center of Winfield, Emporia, Oxford, Udall, Wellington, and Winfield. The event drew 24 more students than last year’s inaugural BCIT Day.
“I was thrilled with the increase in the number of high school students participating in the day’s events and to see the excitement of the students participating,” BCIT Department Chair Beverly Grunder said.
“This is a great way to showcase the department programs.”
Department faculty shared information about their programs and the competitions at the opening session. Sarah Mathews and Sunni Goentzel, co-sponsors for the business organization, Phi Beta Lambda, gave a presentation on the activities of the organization. The Cowley College Admissions Office also helped organize the day.
Competition areas consisted of accounting, business administration, business administrative technology, cosmetology, criminal justice, and graphic design.
- Accounting - Students received accounting information for a business. They were required to journalize and post transactions as well as prepare a trial balance.
- Business Administration - Students were given information about a new business venture. Their job was to name the business, write a mission statement, identify a target market, come up with a catchy slogan, and design a simple company logo. Submissions were judged based on understanding of these terms as well as quality of response.
- Business Administrative Technology - Office Skills Challenge: Keyboarding – Speed and Accuracy; Proofreading; MS Word – Document production
- Cosmetology - Students performed an UP DO on the mannequin provided. The cosmetology department provided the mannequin and tri-pod, hair pins, styling and finishing products. Students created their own design for an elegant UP DO. Students were allowed to bring their own hair accessories.
- Criminal Justice - There were competitions in several events including deductive crime solving, self-defense, and laser shooting activities to determine the Top Rookie.
- Graphic Design - Students were given raw elements to edit and compose into a strong design layout. There was use of a computer lab and printer in order to produce the final composition.
Besides the competitions, students were given a campus tour and lunch prior to the awards presentations.

Students winning first place that were high school seniors received a $250 Endowment Scholarship. First place winners who were not seniors were given a $50 Bookstore Gift Certificate.
