Bryant named recipient of Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship
Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship
Recognized for her stellar work on the basketball court and in the classroom, Cowley College sophomore Breanna Bryant was named the recipient of the Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship prior to the start of the 17th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday at the Arkansas City Country Club.
Bryant, a pre-physical therapy major and member of the Lady Tiger basketball team, became the first female student-athlete to receive the award, which is named in honor of Brian Groves (Class of 1998). Groves was a member of the Tiger golf team before moving on to Southwestern College in Winfield. He was tragically killed in a one-vehicle accident in 2002.
Brian was an avid golfer and a member of the Arkansas City Country Club.
Cowley College athletic director Tom V. Saia believes Bryant is very deserving of the honor.
“She excels on and off the court and will well represent the Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship,” Saia said.
Bryant, who compiled a 3.20 grade point average during her first year at Cowley, was named a second-team all-conference and honorable mention all-region performer after averaging 11.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game as a freshman.
The 5-foot-5 dynamo’s solid play helped the Lady Tiger basketball team finish as co-champions in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
Bryant enjoyed her first year at the school and was humbled to receive the Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship.
“It really is a great honor and I am happy to be the first female recipient of the scholarship,” Bryant said.
