Tigers sweep Pratt 68-55, cap first semester with 10-2 record

Putting the finishing touches on a successful first semester, the Cowley College men’s basketball team picked up an impressive 68-55 win at Pratt Community College on Saturday.

With the victory, the Tigers swept the season series with the Beavers and improved their record to 10-2 heading into the Winter Break. Among its 10 wins, Cowley defeated Pratt twice, knocked off six schools from Oklahoma, and defeated a pair of teams at the Marshalltown Tournament played in Marshalltown, Iowa.

“It makes it a much more enjoyable Christmas when you get that last win,” Cowley head coach Tommy DeSalme said. “We played a heck of a schedule, so I am proud of our whole team to end the first semester at 10-2.”

In the first meeting between Cowley and Pratt Nov. 29 in Arkansas City, the Beavers led by as many as 21 points before the Tigers rallied to win in overtime. On Saturday, the Tigers were the team that built the big lead.

A three-point play by freshman Maurice Williams with seven minutes left in the first half put Cowley in front 24-10. Strong defense by the Tigers helped Cowley take a 28-16 halftime lead.

A three-pointer by Pratt’s Trae Beck cut Cowley’s lead to 45-35 with just under eight minutes remaining, but the Tigers quickly answered with a basket by freshman James Milliken and kept a double-digit lead the rest of the contest.

After being held scoreless in the opening half, Milliken would pour in 14 second half points. Fellow freshman Ryan Devers would go 9-of-9 from the free-throw line down the stretch and added 13 points and six assists. While, sophomore forward Kamren Belin finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

Cowley held Pratt to 35 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers, while turning the ball over only five times themselves.

Bryton Hobbs, who spent his freshman season at Cowley, went 10-of10 from the free-throw line and led Pratt with 21 points in the defeat.

Cowley, winners of five games in a row, will open play in the Jayhawk East Jan. 4 at Fort Scott at 7:30 p.m. Cowley will then return home to play Neosho County Saturday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.

“We will come back refreshed and ready to go on January 4,” DeSalme said.
