Tiger tennis players gain valuable experience at Small College Championships
Taking part in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, AL, the Cowley College men and women’s tennis teams got solid play from its four representatives.
Lady Tiger sophomores Diana Davitaia and Zsofia Biro advanced to the women’s doubles final before losing to Kerrie Cartwright and Audrey Leitz of Tyler Junior College 4-6, 5-7. The second set was tied 5-5 before the team from Tyler was able to win the final two games.
Cartwright and Leitz went on to defeat NCAA Division II Oklahoma Christian’s Hermon Brhane and Lucie Spikova in the Super Bowl. Their win marks the first time since 1997 that a junior college representative won the Super Bowl. With the win, the duo advances to play Nov. 3-6 at the ITA/USTA Intercollegiate Indoor National Championships, which will be held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Despite the loss in the finals, Cowley head coach Josh Cobble was proud of his doubles team.
“The girls played a great match,” Cobble said. “The fact we played Tyler that close shows we can compete with anybody.”
Davitaia also shined in singles play as she bounced back from a first-round defeat to win her final two matches in the back draw and place fifth. Davitaia defeated Sadia Mayou from Georgia Perimeter College 6-1, 6-4 before knocking off Greta Veinberga of St. Petersburg college 6-1, 6-3 in the fifth place match.
“Diana showed really good toughness and has matured a lot from last season to this fall,” Cobble said. “I was glad to see her do as well as she did.”
The duo of Zack Evenden and Nei Dos Santos represented the Tiger men’s tennis team at the Small College Championships and went 1-2 in doubles play. Evenden and Dos Santos won their first match against Fresno City College before losing to doubles teams from Collin County and Los Angeles Pierce College as they placed fourth at the tourney.
“The guys didn’t play quite as well as I had hoped, but it was a one of a kind experience for them,” Cobble said.
The Tiger tennis teams will return to action in the spring.
