Tiger track and field teams continue to improve
With the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships less than two weeks away, the Cowley College men and women’s track and field teams continue to post impressive performances leading up to the big meet. The majority of the squads competed at the Central Missouri State Relays on Friday and Saturday in Warrensburg, MO, while a select group of men had the opportunity to compete at the prestigious University of Nebraska Husker Invite.
The Central Missouri meet is considered to be one of the toughest small college meets in the Midwest. At the meet, the Tiger men were led by Josh Phillips, who won his second meet of the year by clearing 15-feet-7 inches in the pole vault. Rick Valcin and Cody Rosson also surpassed national qualifying marks in the pole vault and finished tied for fourth after clearing 14-7 ¼.
“All three vaulters are proof that if you do the work you will get the results,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said.
Freshman Tim Young ran a personal best time of 22.72 and placed third in the 200-meter dash, while also placing ninth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.08.
“Tim ran really well and is coming on strong,” Phillips said.
Fellow freshman Jack Taylor ran an indoor personal best time of15.24.36 in the 5,000-meter run, placing fourth and hitting the national qualifying mark for the first time.
The only runners to finish ahead of Taylor were a pair of NCAA Division II All-Americans and an NAIA All-American.
“Jack ran one of the smartest 5,000-meter races I have seen him run and did exactly what we asked him to do,” Phillips said.
The Tigers had six men qualify to compete at the University of Nebraska and were led by Darryl Brown and Fred Taylor’s national qualifying performances in the 200-meter run. Both Brown and Taylor broke Taylor’s previous 200-meter school record with Taylor getting the record back (21.71) in the 200-meter consolation final.
“This is a great meet and a great facility and our guys ran really well,” Phillips said.
Bryan Jasmin also hit the national qualifying mark in the 60-meter hurdles (8.29), while Charles Ross hit the national qualifying standard in the 800-meter run (1:56.46).
No Lady Tiger athletes competed at Nebraska, but they had several good performances at Central Missouri. Sophomore Jessalyn Lanoy finished fourth and freshman Valerie Nielson placed ninth in the 800-meter run. While, freshman Morgan Brant placed sixth in the high jump with a national qualifying mark of 5-1 ¼.
Sophomore Kadie Peoples also cleared the national qualifying mark in the pole vault as she placed 10th in the event (10-0).
“Morgan is ready to jump even higher and Kadie is getting more consistent in the pole vault,” Phillips said.
The Lady Tigers also saw good things from its throwers as Lacy Tipton (45-1 ¾), Kammie Mercer (43-10), and Kira Vega (42-6 ¾) each achieved personal bests in the weight throw.
Up next, both Tiger track and field teams will compete at the Highland Community College Indoor Scottie Classic on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The meet will serve as a tune-up for the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championship. All of the Tigers’ field event athletes will compete, with just a few of the runners going to the meet.
