Lady Tiger volleyball team to play for national title

Advancing to the national championship match for the second time in Jenifer Bahner’s three years as head coach of the Cowley College volleyball team, the top-seeded Lady Tigers defeated No. 12-seed Phoenix (AZ) Community College 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division II National Volleyball Tournament played Friday in Toledo, OH.

The Lady Tigers advance to play second-seeded Oakland (MI) Community College (41-3) in the national championship match Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Cowley has won 21 matches in a row and is 37-2 on the season.

The Lady Tigers scored the final three points of the first set and then finished the second set by scoring the final six points. Set two featured nine ties and three lead changes.

Similar to the second set, the third set had 10 ties and three lead changes before Phoenix was able to pick up its lone win.

Cowley left no doubt in set five by storming out to a 13-7 lead and leading by as many as eight points in the 25-19 win.

As in Thursday’s victories, Martyna Gluchowicz and Goda Jankauskaite led Cowley in kills. However, Emily Barto, Danika Maggard and freshman Georgina Perez also made solid contributions in the win.

Molley Scanlon did a nice job setting up the hitters for kills, while Shanna Seyfarth led the team in digs.
