Lady Tiger basketball team heads into break with come from behind win at Pratt
Trailing by 10 points midway through the second half of its game at Pratt Community College on Saturday, the Cowley College women’s basketball team turned up its defensive intensity en route to a 59-55 come from behind win.
The win was Cowley’s fifth in a row and helps the Lady Tigers head into the Winter Break with a record of 9-3.
Cowley shot just 28.6 percent from the floor, but forced Pratt into 28 turnovers, which led to the Lady Tigers out-scoring Pratt 20-10 in points off turnovers.
Saturday’s game was much different than the first meeting between the teams as Cowley won the earlier matchup in Arkansas City by 27 points.
“I thought they were better than us for 35 minutes, so we were thrilled to escape with the win,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “Despite shooting it horribly, we continued to fight and stick around long enough to win.”
Cowley grabbed its first lead of the game (49-48) on a three-pointer by sophomore Chynna Ramelb with less than four minutes remaining and held on for the four-point win. Ramelb led Cowley in scoring with 12 points, and added four assists and three steals.
Cowley made up for its tough shooting night by grabbing 26 offensive rebounds, which led to them out-scoring Pratt 19-4 on second chance points.
Symone Murray joined Ramelb in double figures in scoring with 11 points, while Breanna Bryant added nine points and three steals.
Ann Pauly led Pratt with 13 points but made only 3-of-14 shots from the floor thanks to solid defense by Bryant and freshman T’ondria Nolen. Whitney Bates added 12 points for the Lady Beavers but was forced into several turnovers late in the ball game due to ferocious defense played by Lady Tiger freshman Tonisha Walker. Bates would finish the game with nine turnovers.
Cowley will look to continue its winning ways when they open play in the Jayhawk East Jan. 4 at Fort Scott at 5:30 p.m. Cowley will then return home to play Neosho County Saturday, Jan. 7 at 5 p.m.
“We hope to be more consistent with our play in the second semester,” Clark said.
