Lady Tiger soccer has season come to an end with loss to Hutchinson

soccer
Battling the No. 5-ranked Hutchinson Lady Blue Dragons to within one goal at the end of the first half, the Cowley College women’s soccer team seemed poised to pull the upset Wednesday in Arkansas City. However, Hutchinson showed why they are one of the nation’s best teams as they scored six second half goals en route to a 7-0 win in the Lady Tigers’ final game of the season.

“I think Hutchinson was frustrated getting only one goal in the first half, but we did not match their intensity in the second half,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight said.

Cowley finishes the year with a record of 7-10-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Lady Tigers ended up in ninth place in the conference and region, just missing out on one of the top-eight spots in the region playoffs.

Cowley suffered four, one-goal defeats in region play.

“It is an awfully bitter pill to swallow knowing we had opportunities but didn’t finish what we set out to do,” Straight said.

Hutchinson, which improved to 13-2 overall and 10-2 in the Jayhawk Conference, was led by Melissa Hetherington’s hat-trick as the freshman from Burnley, England, scored three goals in the second half.

Cowley goalkeeper Erika Carpenter was under constant pressure in the second half and stopped nine of the 16 shots she faced in the game.

The Lady Tigers will say goodbye to eight sophomores. The sophomores are, Bailey Martinson (11 goals, 11 assists in career), Teryn Engels (four goals, four assists), Dakota Osborne (six goals, eight assists), Maricarmen Visoso (eight assists), Nayara Do Carmo (four assists), Tiffany Clock, Alejandra Alonso, and Erika Carpenter.

“I am going to miss the sophomores a lot, they were some of the hardest workers I have ever coached,” Straight said.

To make up for the loss of the sophomores Straight plans on being aggressive in recruiting.

With 10 freshmen on this year’s roster, Cowley will return a strong nucleus of players. Still, Straight hopes they learned something from this challenging season.

“I hope they learned what they thought was enough is not near enough,” Straight said. “They need to think about what they need to do and have a better mental focus off the field. It will require them to put in the work in the off-season workouts.”
