District 58 to host kindergarten roundups for incoming parents

Parents of incoming District 58 kindergartners will have the opportunity to visit their school, meet the principal and staff, and get their questions answered during the upcoming annual Kindergarten Roundups. Parents whose children will be five years old on or before September 1, 2012, are encouraged to call their neighborhood elementary school prior to the kindergarten roundup for information about registration.

Kindergarten Roundup dates and times for 2012 are as follows:

Belle Aire: March 6, 9 a.m.

58 Doing Good shines a spotlight on District 58 service projects

Collecting canned goods for the local food pantry. Donating hats, mittens, coats and other items of warm clothing to families in need. Collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House. Jumping Rope for Heart to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Writing letters to Santa to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Students to hear from writers, illustrators during annual District 58 Author Fest

District 58 students will have the chance to hear about the art of storytelling from some of the best in their field during the 2012 Author Fest, set for Feb. 15-17.

Seven District 58 schools honored with Academic Excellence awards

Seven District 58 schools were recently honored with Academic Excellence awards from the state. These awards are given to schools in which at least 90 percent of students met or exceeded state standards in reading and math for three consecutive years, as measured by the Illinois Standards Achievement Test.

Across the state, only 438 schools earned Academic Excellence Awards for 2011. Receiving the designation this year in District 58 were Belle Aire, Fairmount, Highland, Hillcrest, Kingsley, Pierce Downer and Whittier schools.

Young scientists show their chops at 31st annual District 58 science fair

Nearly 600 budding young scientists participated in the 31st annual District 58 Science Fair at O’Neill Middle School Jan. 21.

The hallways and gymnasiums were packed with students eagerly answering questions and discussing their experiments with the judges, which included high school students, parents, staff members, professional scientists and representatives from Downers Grove Friends of the Gifted (FRoG), which co-sponsors the fair. More than 200 volunteer judges assisted with this year’s science fair.

District 58 utilizes variety of notification methods for weather-related school closures

With the onset of the winter weather season, District 58 would like to remind parents and community members about the many ways we provide notification should it become necessary to close school for the safety of our students.

In the event of hazardous weather, the Superintendent of Schools may deem it necessary to close school.
