Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program
We are pleased to announce that the University of Alabama at Birmingham Internal Medicine Residency Program has been renamed the University of Alabama at Birmingham Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program, effective today, November 1, 2011. As you know, Dr. Tinsley Harrison was the first Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and was instrumental in its growth to national acclaim.
tinsley harrison pic Dr. Harrison was known for his interest in resident education, frequently inviting UAB residents to his home for dinner to discuss interesting and medically complex patients.
In today’s world of changing requirements for graduate medical education, we are committed to preserving our core values of excellence in medical education, valuing patient ownership, clinical reasoning, and professionalism. To quote Dr. Harrison, we believe “no greater opportunity, responsibility, or obligation can fall to the lot of a human being than to become a physician.”
By renaming the residency, we hope to impress to all the legacy of Dr. Harrison and the continued values our program cherishes in the modern era of medical education. We are adding his name to our letterhead and official correspondence with the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education. As we continue to grow with the challenges and opportunities of 21st century medicine, we promise to preserve the legacy and core values of internal medicine, and will continue to make our program one that would make Dr. Harrison proud.
