The Department of Medicine is the hub of a number of major centers of research of national prominence whose directors are Department of Medicine faculty. A partial listing of centers affiliated with the Department of Medicine include The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Center, the Center for Aging, the Geriatric Education Center, the Center for AIDS Research, the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research (COERE), the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, the Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, the Lung Health Center, the Liver Center, the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Injury Control Research Center, the UAB Sexually Transmitted Diseases Center, the Nephrology Research and Training Center, and the Comprehensive Diabetes Center.

Active Grants for the Department of Medicine, reported by the UAB Office of Grants and Contracts Administration as of 10/01/2011, totalled $102.8 million.
