Introduction to Wine-Making

Tuition: $60. With Judson Howard.Learn to make wine at home with a variety of fruits, berries, concentrate and a wine kit.  Howard has made a hobby of making delicious wine at home for the past 35 years. His entries have taken 1st, 2nd, 3rd and “Best in Show” at the West Virginia State Fair for the past two years. Students will learn about the equipment and supplies used in the process of wine-making (and the cost and where to purchase it), fermentation, bottling and storage. Due to the nature of the product being studied, participants must be at least 21 years of age to register.

Beginning Photography

Thursdays, Feb. 2- March 1, 7:00 to 9:30 p.m., Room 408 Warren Hall, DSLCC Clifton Forge campus. Tuition: $90. This is the first half of a ten-week course that will cover Beginning Photography from the perspectives of a digital camera. Since this course focuses on the digital camera, students will need to be computer literate and supply their own camera, preferably a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex). Understanding Your Digital Camera

If you are a beginning photographer or you just want to learn more about your digital camera, then this workshop is for you. You’ll be able to take better pictures and get more comfortable with using your camera. Getting Started with Photoshop

Hands-on, step-by-step approach to learning digital darkroom techniques for correcting and enhancing digital images using Adobe Photoshop Elements software. Requirements: Photoshop Elements Software (10.0 is the most recent version; a 30-day trial may be downloaded from the Adobe web site for free.) Students will need to bring their own laptop computers to follow along and complete assignments in class. Required textbook: “The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers”. Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People 

Tuesday, May 1, 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., Room 502, McCarthy Hall, Clifton Fo rge campus. Instructor: David Haynes. If you yearn to experience the joy of playing piano, but don’t want years of weekly lessons, this one-evening workshop is for you!  Learn chords, not notes, in this fun beginning class in chord piano techniques, along with many insider secrets on how to embellish songs. Tuition is $50, payable to DSLCC; a $25 materials fee for a 32-page workbook and a 68-minute practice CD will be collected by the instructor the night of the class. Beginning Blacksmithing with a Twist

Wednesdays, Feb. 8 & 15 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuition: $110 (includes materials fee)

Learn to make decorative hooks with a variety of different twists in this beginning blacksmithing class at the Clifton Forge School of the Artswith Glen Bryant, who has been a metalworker and blacksmith for the better part of 40 years. Students will take home their very own hand-forged piece of ironwork at the conclusion of the course. Class size is limited to four students. Reading Paintings  for Understanding  & Enjoyment

Mon., Jan. 16-Feb. 20, 7- 9 pm, $160. at the Clifton Forge School of the Arts With art instructor Judith Sivonda. Most people start to lose interest in viewing art when they enter the 20th century gallery. Realism they can understand, Impressionism is pretty, but if you have ever said, “I don’t understand abstract art” you are one who is missing out on the meaning, purpose and direction of important paintings. This course is designed to be a discussion of art, not just an art history lecture!

Molten Magic: The Art of Fusing Glass

Tues., March 6-27, 6:30-9 pm. at the Clifton Forge School of the Arts $75, plus materials fee of $30 (paid to instructor George Ayars). Explore the exciting transition of glass from hard, brittle pieces to a mystical, moldable state, where glass flows like molten lava, pieces join, and art is formed under intense heat.  Create a plate, bowl, a free form fused panel, or a series of glass tiles.  Learn the techniques used to create many kinds of fused glass projects, including glass compatibility, ramping schedules, flash venting, and more.  Some previous glass cutting experience is recommended, but not required.

Beekeeping: Getting Started

Motorcycle Rider Safety Courses

Spring courses: March 23-25, April 27-29; May 18-20. Fridays, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Room 905, DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center, Buena Vista; Saturdays and Sundays, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Lee-Hi Travel Plaza, Lexington. Tuition:  $120. Participants must have a driver’s license or learner’s permit (a motorcycle learner's permit is not necessary) . Passing the written and riding skills tests earns participants a 30-day DMV motorcycle license. Motorcycles and helmets provided. Class size is limited to 12.  Note: These classes fill up quickly.
