Natural Gas Leaks Policy

OBJECTIVE

This policy is intended to establish responsibilities for response to calls reporting natural gas leaks.

AUTHORITY

Joint discussions between EH&S, University PPD and Maintenance Departments, and GFR.

POLICY

The appropriate Physical Plant/Maintenance Department is the primary contact for reports of natural gas leaks.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Physical Plant/Maintenance Department is the primary contact and first responder for reports of natural gas leaks.

Environmental Health & Safety can assist with odors deemed not to be caused by gas leaks

PROCEDURES

If the volume or nature of calls being received by the Physical Plant/Maintenance Department indicates a serious leak may be occurring, they will immediately contact Gainesville Fire & Rescue and the University Police Department.

The Physical Plant/Maintenance Department will verify the building with the odor complaint is actually served by natural gas and send a knowledgeable person to check on the validity of the odor complaint.

If the Physical Plant/Maintenance Department determines a gas leak warrants evacuation of the building, they will contact University Police and Gainesville Fire & Rescue to assist with the evacuation.

If appropriate, the Physical Plant/Maintenance Department will contact Gainesville Regional Utilities for assistance.

The Physical Plant/Maintenance Department will notify the Environmental Health & Safety Indoor Air Quality office when they receive a call.
