This month Kent State at East Liverpool Associate Professor Dr. Jack Vazzana’s photography is being shown as part of the 2011 Association of Regional Campuses Conference. The show, which includes 20 of Vazzana’s pieces, is titled “Metaphors of Obsession.” According to Vazzana, the show emphasizes the repetitive cultural themes that are self perpetuated foremost in the American ethos.
Earlier this spring, two of his photographs were selected for The Water Tower exhibit, which is held every two years in Louisville, Kentucky. Sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, this juried show is highly competitive. Only 22 artists were accepted out of more than 200 applicants. His photographs, “Leaving “and “Go to Hell,” which represent the contradictory nature of a contemporary woman, were selected.

“She is both empowered and exploited simultaneously,” Vazzana said of his photograph “Leaving.” Both pieces were met with critical praise.

While at Duquesne he was the assistant editor of the student newspaper. In this role, Vazzana created more than 40 cartoons titled “The Doors.,” These are now archived at the university’s Gumberg Library. Following his studies at Duquesne, Vazzana earned a Ph.D. in administration and policy studies from the University of Pittsburgh.
