Graduate Financial Assistance

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Currently, the Women’s Studies Center provides four students with a Graduate Teaching Assistanctship. Usually, the assistantship is available to the student for two years.  During the first year, the Graduate Teaching Assistant works with Women's Studies faculty on course preparation and other classroom activities.  In the second year, successful Graduate Teaching Assistants, under faculty supervision, are assigned to teach  a section of the introductory course in Women's Studies.  The assistantships are awarded competitively base upon merit..

Annette Van Howe Scholars

In the late 1990’s, following her death, the family of Annette Van Howe contributed an endowment to FAU. This endowment is one the largest at the FAU Foundation devoted to student scholarships. According to their wishes, the endowment was to provide assistance to students in the Women’s Studies program. Each year, the Women’s Studies awards one-to-three graduate students with this prestigious scholarship.

Ms. Van Howe was a feminist activist who moved to South Florida in the 1970’s. Feminism, she once explained, “is that men and women should be treated equally. Fundamentally, my whole purpose in life is the equality of women.” She was active in Planned Parenthood of South Palm Beach and Broward counties, was named the American Humanist Association’s Nation Humanist Heroine of the Year, founded the Broward County Women’s History Coalition and was a charter inductee into the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame
