What is an official transcript
An official transcript is a sealed record sent directly to Florida Atlantic University from the institution(s) you attended. You can send them yourself if the envelope has not been opened.
What if I previously attended FAU
If you are a former, degree-seeking FAU student, but not currently enrolled, your eligibility to return will depend on several factors. If you have not attended for at least three consecutive semesters, you must re-apply for admission and pay a $30 nonrefundable application fee. If you are an undergraduate student, go to www.fau.edu/admissions/factsapp.php   For more information regarding students who are returning to FAU after an absence of more than a year, please go to www.fau.edu/admissions/returnstudent.php for further instructions and requirements.
How do I appeal my admission decision
Undergraduate applications from individuals who do not meet the minimum admissions requirements may be reviewed by The Faculty Committee on Student Admissions. Unless there is some new information that was not available at the time your application was reviewed (i.e courses in progress, new grades), there is no need to appeal. If a student has special talents or abilities, physical, learning or emotional disabilities, or has suffered personal or family hardships, may appeal the initial admission decision. The committee is made up of University faculty members and administrators who evaluate admission based on evidence other than academic work. The committee determines the student's ability to succeed in future academic endeavors. Students must appeal in writing, submit letters of recommendation, a personal statement and any other documentation that would substantiate admission as an exception.
How can I change my major
If your admission application is still in progress and you have not been received an admission decision, you may submit your request either by mail, email or fax.

Once we receive this change request, it will be processed. We cannot take this request by phone. It needs to be in writing directly from the student.

However, if you are newly admitted or a currently enrolled student, you will need to contact your College Advisor in order to do a change of major.

Do I need to take the TOEFL exam?

Results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) may be required of students whose first language is not English. Current FAU admission requirements are a score of 550 on the paper-based test (Toefl PBT), or 80 on the internet-based version (Toefl IBT). Instead of Toefl we accept IELTS with the minimum score of 6.5. Information about this examination can be obtained from TOEFL. FAU now offers TOEFL on the Boca Raton campus. visit /testing/TOEFL.phpfor more information

Official TOEFL results are required of all applicants whose native language is not English. Students are exempt from taking the TOEFL exam if they meet the following criteria:

-Have taken over 60 semester hours at a regionally-accredited post-secondary institution in the United States or another English speaking country.

-Have attended a high school in the US for more than three years and have not taken ESL courses to fulfill the core English requirements.

Have attended a foreign secondary or post-secondary school whose primary language of instruction is English.

Can I change my term of entry
Your admission to FAU is specified for a certain semester, and you must enroll during that term. If you wish to change your entry term, make your request by email to admissions@fau.edu or by submitting the Change of Entry Date form. www.fau.edu/admissions/ChangeEntry.php.

While your admission is for a specific term, your application and fee are valid for one academic year (three consecutive semesters). Your request for a change of entry term must be received by the stated application deadlines. If a student attends another collegiate institution in the interim, an official transcript of all work attempted/completed is required. A new application and the application fee are required when admission is changed to a term that begins more than three semesters after the initial admission entry term (example: fall term to a future fall term = new application and fee are required). Before submitting a change of entry, note that admission to the initial term of entry does not guarantee admission to a future term.

Please note that an admission to the initial term of entry does not guarantee admission to a future term. The Change of Entry option is not available for incoming freshman students.

Freshman Applicants

What documents do I need to submit with my application
Freshmen Requirements
In addition to your application and application fee, submit your official high school transcripts and your official ACT or SAT scores.
I am currently a senior in high school and am taking a college class. Will I receive credit at Florida Atlantic University for these classes
FAU accepts credits from regionally accredited institutions when the student receives a grade of "D" or better in college-level courses (not remedial.) Pass/Fail grades are not accepted.
Do you consider the writing scores from the SAT Reasoning Test
Yes we do. We look at all three scores. If you take the test multiple times, we will take the best three individual scores for the best combined score. We also accept the ACT. If you choose to take the ACT you must take the writing portion.
What high school courses are required
The following units of study in high school are required:
English (3 with substantial composition) 4 units
*Mathematics (Algebra 1 level and above) 4 units
Natural Science (2 with lab) 3 units
Social Science 3 units
Foreign Language (of the same language) 2 units
Academic Electives 2 units
Total 18 units
How is my high school GPA calculated
Florida Atlantic University recalculates the academic grade point average used in the admissions selection criteria. Additional weight is given to all courses clearly marked Honors, Advanced, Gifted, Advanced Placement, Advanced International Certificate of Education or International Baccalaureate.
Do you accept students with a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
GED is another option for those students who do not have a graduation diploma from high school. Persons with a GED from any state must achieve a minimum total score of 3000, with no sub score lower than 550, and present a test score of at least 1450 on the SAT or 21 on the ACT. Applicants with a GED should also submit high school transcripts from any school attended.

Additionally, we need your final high school transcript if the foreign language requirement was completed in high school.
Do I have to provide all of my transcripts even though my last school has a combination of all my institutional credits
Yes. Your application will not be processed unless we receive the official transcripts from each college/university you’ve attended.
Can I transfer as a junior with my Associate in Science degree
Students transferring with an Associate in Science degree may need to take additional classes to meet the University transfer requirements (Intellectual foundation of Education) at their current institution, or obtain an Associate in Arts degree. If your AS is articulated with one of FAU’s programs (and you meet all the requirements), you will be admitted to the University, where you can complete the remainder of your required Intellectual Foundation Program.

I currently receive grants & scholarships at the school I am now attending. Will I be eligible for money at Florida Atlantic University as a transfer student
You should consult with FAU’s Office of Financial Aid concerning any grants and loans you may be eligible for. Information on Transfer Scholarships offered through the Office of Admissions can be found online: Transfer Scholarships

  1. Students who were previously enrolled in a degree-seeking program at FAU and now wish to return to the University after an absence of 3 semesters or more.
  2. Students who have already earned a Florida Atlantic University degree.
I am an FAU Alumni and want to get my second bachelor’s degree. Can I just register for classes or do I have to go through the entire application process
You must submit the Transfer Application online at www.fau.edu/admissions/apply. Choose the option “Second Bachelors.” If you have taken college-level courses at any other institution since graduating from FAU, you will need to submit the official transcript from those institutions. You will have to resubmit a Residency Form and required documents for proof of residency.
I left the University and want to come back. What do I do
If you left FAU within the last 3 semesters, you simply need to submit a change of entry form by the appropriate application deadline date. If you left the University more than 3 semesters ago, you must complete a new undergraduate application. Please go to: www.fau.edu/admissions/returnstudent.php for more information.

ADMITTED STUDENTS

What do I do after I’ve been accepted
Do I have to take the Math Placement Exam and how soon do I have to have it completed
All entering freshman, regardless of AP, IB, dual enrollment and CLEP credits; as well as any transfer student with no prior college-level coursework in mathematics, must take the exam.
Students must take the exam between April 1 and the first day of classes for fall semester or any summer session, and between November 1 and the first day of classes for spring semester. We highly recommend that students take the exam early. Students enrolling in the fall semester, for example, should take the exam in April or May. Those entering in the spring should take it in November or early December.
I'd like to change my major now that I've been admitted. How do I go about doing that
A "Change of Major" form (available within the Registrar's Office) must be completed, and submitted to the appropriate FAU college (the college in which your new major resides) along with an unofficial copy of your transcript. Take the form to the Student Services Office within the college of your new major. Generally, an overall cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required to change your major.
Can I add a second major or minor now

FLORIDA RESIDENCY

What are the basic requirements for FL residency
To qualify as a Florida resident for tuition purposes, the claimant (person claiming residency for the student; may be a parent, spouse, legal guardian, or the student themselves) must have established and maintained legal residence and physical presence in Florida for at least 12 months prior to the first day of classes for the term in which Florida residency is being sought. The law allows U.S. citizens, permanent resident aliens, or legal aliens granted indefinite stay by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to be classified as a Florida resident if the applicant, or the claimant in cases where the student is dependent, has met the requirement of residency in the state for at least 12 months preceding the first day of classes. Persons who do not meet the following requirements may be classified as a Florida resident only if they fall within one of the special categories as noted in Section 1009.21, Florida Statutes.
