INTRAMURAL SPORTS FAQS

NEW Intramural Sports Forfeit Deposit

Are you tired of showing up for your Intramural Sports game just to find out the other team isn’t coming? So are we. Starting July 1, 2011, a forfeit deposit will be required for each team prior to registration.

The forfeit deposit is designed to enhance the quality of our leagues, reduce the number of forfeits and recuperate wasted funds spent on staffing costs of forfeited games. Most importantly, the forfeit deposit will improve the overall experience for our participants.  Go to the Intramural Sports website to register your team as usual. You will also notice a link that directs you to the “FAU Marketplace”. Prior to completing your team registration, you must go to the “FAU Marketplace” where you will be instructed “purchase” a team forfeit deposit for $30.00 using a credit/debit card. The charge should only go through if your team fails to show up for a scheduled game. The Intramural Sports staff will contact you if this occurs. If you show up to all of your scheduled games, all charges will be cleared no later than the league championship game.

It is important to note that the majority of teams who play in our leagues will not be affected. In addition, you still have the option to default a game if you know at least one business day in advance that you will not be able to make your game. If you have questions, please contact Kate Quinlan at (561) 297-4512 or kquinla3@fau.edu.

What is a forfeit?  A game will be considered a forfeit if a team fails to have the minimum number of players ready for play when game time occurs.  For specific sports minimums, please visit the rules section of our website.

What is a default?  If you know ahead of time that your team is unable to make a game, you must call or email the Coordinator of Sports & Competition or Sports & Competition Graduate Assistant at least one business day in advance to notify us of your intention.  That means for a Sunday or Monday game, you must notify the Coordinator of Sports & Competition OR Sports & Competition Graduate Assistant by 5:00pm on the previous Friday. The Sports & Competition staff will notify the other team. The defaulting team will receive a loss, but sportsmanship will not be affected, and they will not be charged.

What if I don't have a credit card?   The captain of the team does not have to be the person who purchsases a team on the "FAU Marketplace," it can be any team representative.

Is there a forfeit deposit required for all sports?   No.  The forfeit deposit only affects teams singing up for league sports.  One-day tournaments or individual sports will not require a forfeit deposit.

I signed up a team and then decided that I won't have enough people to play the season.  Will I still be charged ?   As long as you notify the Intramural Sports Staff at least 1 business day prior to your first scheduled game, we will remove you from the schedule with no penalty.  Within 1 business day, we recommend that you visit the Free Agent List to find more players and avoid a charge.

If I know my team can't play for one of our games, how do I avoid a charge?  You have several options if you know in advance.

  1. Make sure it is crossed off on the black out dates when you are signing up your team.

  2. Check out the free agent list and pick up additional players.

  3. Call the Intramural Sports Office to DEFAULT your game at least 1 business day in advance.

If neither team shows up for a scheduled game, both teams will be charged.  If two opposing captains mutually agree to default a game, BOTH captains must contact the Sports & Competition Staff in order to avoid a charge.

Will I ever be scheduled during times I can't play?  No!  You will have the option to fill out black out dates and times, during which your team will not be scheduled.  Playoffs may require you to play at inconvenient times, but this will be communicated to you in advance.

I showed up for my game and the other team did not.  Can we use the game site?  Yes, you may use the game site during your allotted time, however, the Intramural Sports Staff may not officiate or score keep as this will not be considered an Intramural Sports contest.

I forfeited once and paid $30.  Now what?   After the first forfeit, your team captain will be contacted by the Sports & Competition Staff to confirm your intention to participate in the league.  A team may choose to be removed from the league or to continue playing.  If a second forfeit occurs, a team will be removed from the league but the account will not be charged a second time.

Can I appeal my forfeit charge?  Yes, in the event of an extenuating circumstance, you may appeal a forfeit charge.  Tests, traffic, class conflicts and work obligations are not considered examples of extenuating circumstances.  To appeal, email the Coordinator of Sports and Competition within 48 hours of the forfeit explaining the circumstance.

What are Intramural Sports? Intramural Sports (IMs) are organized sport competitions between FAU students and/or members.  Teams are made up of friends, classmates, etc. and must register with the Intramural Sports Office.  We will create a schedule based on when your team is available and all you need to do is show up with your Owl Card and play!  Campus Recreation provides student officials, jerseys for each team and all necessary equipment.

What sports are offered? Fall Leagues include: 7-on-7 Flag Football, Indoor Volleyball and Indoor Soccer. Spring Leagues include:  5-on-5 Basketball, 4-on-4 Flag Football, Softball and Outdoor Soccer. Special events and tournaments change every semester.  Please check the Intramural Sports calendar for current special events and tournaments.

How do I play? Intramural Sport teams are typically comprised of friends, classmates, roommates, etc.  We recommend that you form a team by asking your friends to participate! One person needs to be designated as the team captain as this person acts as the liaison between the Intramural Sports office and the rest of the team.  Visit the individual sport page to register your team online.  If you cannot find enough people to form a team, you can join a league as a free agent.

When and where are the intramural games? All Intramural Sports games are held on the Boca Raton Campus at FAU.  Flag Football, Softball and Soccer are held at the Henderson Fields directly behind the A.D. Henderson University School at thee east end of Lee Street.  Indoor Volleyball and Basketball are held at the Recreation and Fitness Center at the north end of the Breezeway.  Most Intramural Sports games are held on Sunday through Thursday evenings, between 5:00pm and 11:00pm.

Are there practices? Some teams may elect to hold practices on their own, but there are no scheduled practices for Intramural Sports.

What if I didn’t play sports in high school?  Do I have to be good to play intramurals? Nope!  All skill levels are welcome.  There is a recreational league available to teams that just want to have fun playing sports. Intramural Sports promote sportsmanship, teamwork and participation so we encourage you to come out and have fun!

What should I do if my team can’t make a game? Contact the Intramural Sports Staff as soon as you know at (561) 297-4512.    Teams who fail to contact the Intramural Sport Office at least 1 business day in advance will forfeit their game, be charged $30 and may also become ineligible for playoffs.

How many people can I have on my roster? Most sports do not have a limit to the maximum amount of people you can have on a roster.  However, you must have a minimum number of players to start any game.  If you are short on players, you may contact someone from the Free Agent List.

Do I have to be a student on the Boca Raton Campus in order to play? No, all Florida Atlantic University students are welcome to participate in Intramural Sports.  Members are also eligible to participate.  Faculty/Staff, alumni, etc. must purchase a Campus Recreation membership before participation in Intramural Sports.  Your Owl Card must be presented before participation in every Intramural contest or activity.
