Job Opportunity
The Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention
has an open position:
Position available: FISP Coordinator/Office Manager
Pay: $10 an hour. 40 hours/week.
Starting: July 16, 2012
Requirements:You must be trustworthy, have a background and/or interest in psychology, adequate computer skills (advanced comp skills a plus), and a strong interest in suicide prevention. Bi-lingual a plus.
If interested, please email Alla Andelman at allafisp@gmail.com and attach a CV with a note of your interest.
This is the complete description of the position:
You would have varied responsibilities. Primarily, you would serve as an office manager/executive assistant, because this is an office only run by Ms. Rosen and you.
The admin tasks include filing, taking calls, organizing the office, making copies, making brochures, pamphlets, and packets, etc. Additionally, you will help hire people (review CVs, schedule and facilitate interviews) for various open positions for our SUN programs (and potentially can take part in one as well) that teach problem solving skills in a group or teaching format. You may also be responsible to co-create a curriculum for new programs FISP develops.
On the psych side, you will be required to answer the phone, which half the time is from survivors who have lost somebody to suicide and are looking for information and our survivor groups. Additionally, very occasionally, attempters also call, and you would talk to them until they are safe and provide resources for them to get help or call a crisis line. Also, you will be called on to help Ms. Rosen with verifying psychological information for her hand outs and powerpoint presentations (as well as your own) and researching statistics for reports and grants. You will get an opportunity to write grants (and will be required to help Ms. Rosen revise them) as well. Also, Ms. Rosen presents and runs suicide and bullying prevention trainings, and will allow you to do a few of them throughout the year so you can add that to your CV. Finally, you will be involved in health fairs, where you will represent FISP and provide information and answer questions on suicide prevention and what FISP does.
Finally, a big part of your job will be to help Ms. Rosen organize and facilitate three major events, including a "Survivor's Day Conference" for suicide loss, the annual Tri County Suicide Prevention Conference hosted at NSU (June 9th this year), and the annual fund raising Dinner Dance (which is like planning a wedding!)
Personal Note:
Some of this work isn't glamorous, but it certainly teaches you a lot if you will work for a nonprofit in the future and need to raise money, as well as giving practical experience in organizing a conference. Ms. Rosen welcomes innovative ideas. Additionally, I know for a fact that this position impressed my current internship when I was interviewing for it. Good luck everyone, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Alla Andelman, M.S.
