School of Social Work Receives Problem Gambling Prevention Grant

During the month of October 2010, the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG) awarded the School of Social Work a grant to conduct community awareness targeted toward decreasing the incident of problem gambling in South Florida.  This grant is focused on reaching at-risk populations such as seniors, veterans, college students, youth and minorities in Broward, Palm Beach, Okeechobee, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties. This initiative involves extensive outreach, community mobilization, education, training, exhibition, and information dissemination in numerous public and organizational settings with various stakeholders and gatekeepers.  MSW students have been recruited to deliver grant programming in English and Spanish based on FCCG  toolkits and  educational modules. Currently,  David Abegg, Andrea Rincon, Joy Stewart,  and Cathelen Trejos are  working with Stephen Ferrante on this project.

FCCG, a non-profit educational and advocacy organization under contract with Florida State Government, is committed to increasing public awareness about problem and compulsive gambling.  FCCG provides services and supports to Floridians in need as well as professionals and others serving this population.  FCCG and this grant project take neither an anti- nor pro- gambling stance.
