Lifelong Learning Society to Reach New Highs

Membership in FAU’s acclaimed Lifelong Learning Society is expected to reach record levels this year with an anticipated 18,000 registrations on the Boca Raton campus, 14,500 on the Jupiter campus, 900 to 1,000 on the Treasure Coast campus and 550 on the Broward campuses. The Treasure Coast and Broward LLS locations have just completed their first year of operation.

“We anticipate that there will be at least 34,000 LLS registrations throughout the system this year,” said Assistant Provost for Lifelong Learning Ely Meyerson, who has directed the program since 1995. FAU’s program is believed to be the largest such organization in the world.

LLS members taking courses during the current winter session include 10,300 on the Boca Raton campus, a record 7,500 on the Jupiter campus and 500 each at the Treasure Coast and Broward campuses. “Our continued success and growth is due to the outstanding faculty, institutional support, excellent teaching facilities and sustained support from the community throughout FAU’s service area,” said Meyerson. “The syllabus is also a very varied one that represents the interests of the LLS students.”

Taught by FAU professors and distinguished guest lecturers, course offerings include such varied subjects as foreign policy, music, art, history, acting, ethics and movies.

FAU’s LLS was founded in 1980 with the goal of enriching the lives of mature students by offering learning opportunities through non-credit, university-level courses. Originally established on the Boca Raton campus, the program was implemented in northern Palm Beach County on the Jupiter campus in 1997. The rapid growth at that campus has resulted in construction of the Elinor Bernon Rosenthal Lifelong Learning Complex, a $5.2 million facility comprised of three buildings totaling 22,000 square feet. Treasure Coast LLS courses are held at the Vero Beach Museum of Art in the 240-seat Leonhardt Auditorium.

The current winter session runs through mid-March. The spring session will begin in late March. For more information, call ext. 7-3171 or visit the Lifelong Learning Society website.
