Freshman Convocation to Feature Author Susan Orlean

Among the most exciting of the “new traditions” being introduced at FAU are the Freshman Reading Program and the Freshman Convocation, which will bring together members of the incoming freshman class in a most memorable way and culminate on Sunday, Aug. 26, with a presentation by best-selling author Susan Orlean.

Everyone in the University community is invited to attend the Convocation, which will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium on the Boca Raton campus.

Don't Miss... “Paradox Swamp: Beauty, Obsession and a Strange Green Land,” a companion exhibit to the Freshman Reading Program at FAU Boca Raton's S.E. Wimberly Library through Sept. 5. More Information...

This summer, all first-time-in-college students who have been accepted by FAU are being encouraged to read Ms. Orlean’s best-selling book, The Orchid Thief, which is set in South Florida. A virtual community has been created to facilitate discussion of the book by freshmen, upperclassmen and faculty. Additionally, the website introduces new students to many aspects of life at FAU, including student activities, campus recreation facilities and dining services.

To visit the virtual community, go to Blackboard and log in with the username: draines_guest and the password: core. Look for the box titled "My Organizations" and click on Freshman Reading Program. Anyone who wishes to become part of the virtual community should send a request to Dr. Deborah Raines at draines@fau.edu. The virtual community will remain active until Aug. 26.

"I really think that this is a great site that offers many things, which encourage me to post," wrote Islande Joseph—a freshman in the Class of 2007, Charles B. Schmidt College of Science. "It is very well organized. Also, it gives any individual the chance to give their opinion and talk about the book. I like being able to ask any type of question (which can help me make a better transition to FAU), learn great and new information, and gain support from the mentors. When I heard about the community, I knew that it could help me with becoming a freshman at FAU."

After Ms. Orlean speaks, she will be the guest of honor at a reception in the Grand Palm Room of the Student Union, where she will autograph copies of her book.

This inaugural Freshman Reading Program/Freshman Convocation project is being coordinated by Dr. Mary Ann Gosser Esquilin and Dr. Deborah Raines. Click here for or more information.
