Hurricane Season Arrives; FAU Prepared

As the 2007 hurricane season arrives, University officials are reiterating one message: Be prepared. After a lean 2006 season, they are reminding all members of the University community that even minor storms can cause disruption. Last year's Tropical Storm Ernesto threatened Florida and closed the University for two days at the beginning of the fall semester.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration experts are predicting a 75 percent chance that the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane season will be above normal. Between 13 and 17 named storms are predicted, with seven to 10 becoming hurricanes and three to five developing into major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher.

The University prepares for hurricanes through annual exercises and drills to ensure that key staff is trained for duties before, during and after a hurricane strikes. Departments’ and units’ emergency plans are revised annually, and communications systems and equipment are tested and maintained. It is essential that all staff and faculty familiarize themselves with their department emergency plans and that their contact information is current. Preparing your home as well as your workplace is vital.

Decisions for the protection of students, staff, faculty and equipment, such as the suspension of classes and other University functions, are made after careful, thorough deliberation. These decisions are communicated to students, parents, staff, faculty, visitors and the community using several methods:

  • multiple telephone hotlines (see box above)
  • the FAU home page at www.fau.edu
  • University-wide e-mails
  • the news media

New information will be posted on the hotlines and Web site as required by changing conditions and three times a day during the hurricane. Additionally, the University will send a steady flow of news bulletins to all area television and radio stations as well as local newspapers.

The 2007 hurricane season officially started on June 1 and will continue through Nov. 30. Additional hurricane resources include the National Hurricane Center at www.nhc.noaa.gov.
