Latin American Studies

Description: The concentration in Latin American Studies is designed to help students develop an interdisciplinary understanding of culture, history, politics, and contemporary issues in Latin America and the Caribbean. The concentration is designed to present a broad regional approach to Latin America and to provide the student with a general knowledge and sympathetic understanding of the people and problems of this important area of the world. Latin American Studies is a flexible concentration that allows students to explore a wide range of subjects of particular interest. This flexibility allows the possibility of combining Latin American Studies with other Honors College concentrations such as History, Political Science, Anthropology, Spanish Language, International Studies, or Environmental Studies. The Latin American Studies concentration presents numerous opportunities after graduation. The interdisciplinary nature of the program prepares the student for further study in any number of academic fields at the graduate level. Students who take upper division courses in Spanish to fulfil the elective requirements of the concentration should be well prepared to enter graduate programs in Language and Literature. Students who complete their language requirements and focus their electives in Political Science, History, Anthropology, or Latin American Studies should be prepared to enter graduate programs in those disciplines. The Latin American Studies concentration also provides valuable preparation for careers in diplomatic service, international organizations, education, banking, foreign missions, business, and consulting.
Available Options: Concentration in Latin American Studies (Students who complete the requirements of the Honors College Latin American Studies concentration will also receive a
Certificate in Latin American Studies from Florida Atlantic University); Minor in Spanish.

Language: Students may satisfy the language requirements by demonstrating proficiency equivalent to SPN 2221 by taking the CLEP exams, by completing a more advanced course, or by some other means acceptable to the Advisory Board.
Study Abroad: Students who wish to concentrate in Latin American Studies must spend at least one summer or semester studying abroad in Latin America. Study abroad courses may be used to fulfil the language, core, or elective requirements of the Latin American Studies concentration (subject to approval by the advisory board).

Electives: Students must complete four elective courses with substantial content in Latin America or the Caribbean. These courses must be drawn from at least two different disciplines. The following courses may be used to fulfill the elective requirement. Courses used for other concentration requirements can't be used as electives. Honors Thesis: Concentrators will register for a thesis preparation course during the spring semester of their junior year (3 credits) and will write an honors thesis in Latin American studies during their senior year (6 credits).
