"The Longest Winter" is less a title than a generator of images: desolate white landscapes; a forest of spotted, leafless trees; lonely cabins; late night kitchen lights; forlorn tea kettles whistling promises of warmth. And more importantly, isolated human beings producing objects not for profit, but to appease a different sort of need.
