Wed, Feb 22 Eco-Boat Trip – departs from Harbor Branch. A special look at land birds in the native scape near campus and shore birds on the Lagoon, it’s Birding 101 with Capt. Chop Lege and his knowledgeable crew. Join Friends for a short walk on campus and a trip aboard the pontoon boat “Gator” to see birds, dolphins, turtle, manatees and more. Tue, Feb 28 Sunset Cruise up the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. Depart downtown Stuart from Sailor’s Return at 3:30 p.m. for a trip with Capt. Wed, Feb 29 OSLS: “Challenges Facing Marine Mammals in a Changing Arctic” Greg O’Corry-Crowe, HBOI/FAU – Harbor Branch’s Polar Research Program uses molecular genetic techniques and satellite-linked telemetry in the study of northern temperate, Arctic and Antarctic marine mammals. Join Dr. O’Corry-Crowe as he describes the range of modern field and lab techniques used by his program to investigate the effects of climate change and ecosystem regime shifts on marine mammals and other apex predators in the Artic.

The winter lecture series is presented every Wednesday (January 12 – March 21) at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. An opportunity to meet the speaker, appetizer buffet and cash bar follow the presentation. Wed, Mar 7    OSLS: Everything’s Coming Up Corals! Research and Exploration in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary-Joshua Voss, HBOI-FAU. Harbor Branch researchers have teamed up with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration to explore and characterize the diverse and beautiful habitats in the Flower Garden Banks, a reef system 100 miles off the coast of Texas. Join Dr. Voss for an evening of underwater enchantment with images, videos and new findings from this spectacular ocean oasis.

Wed, Mar 14  OSLS: Human-Centered Computing-Kenneth Ford, Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition. The emerging concept of human-centered computing represents a significant shift in thinking about intelligent machines and, indeed, about information technology in general. Dr. Ford’s lecture will discuss the human-centered perspective and provide a survey of research activities at IHMN developed under this framework.

Wed, Mar 21 Oil, Dispersants, and Ecosystem Health – Sara Edge, HBOI-FAU – Characterizing threats to ecosystem health from oil spills and dispersant use can be challenging, particularly in areas with diverse ecosystems, such as the Gulf of Mexico. Dr. Sara Edge will discuss the consequences of both dispersed and undispersed oil and how a better understanding of their modes of action will lead to more effective decision making.

Wed, Mar 28  Sunken Treasure! Marine Drug Discovery for Pancreatic Cancer Treatment-Dr. Esther Guzman, HBOI-FAU. The oceans are a rich source of bioactive natural products. This lecture will focus on Harbor Branch’s drug discovery program, describing how marine-derived materials are screened to find potential novel drugs to fight pancreatic cancer and will highlight current compounds in the pipeline that demonstrate exciting potential in fighting pancreatic cancer.
