Florida Atlantic University, the fifth public university in Florida, opened its doors in 1964 with an enrollment of 867 upper-division and graduate students. In 1984, FAU admitted its charter freshman class, becoming a four-year institution. By 2007, enrollment university-wide had grown to more than 26,000. Full-time students account for 55% of the total enrollment. FAU enrolled 2,676 first-time-college students for fall 2007. Students are enrolled from 137 different countries and 47 states plus the District of Columbia.

Lifelong Learning
There are over 19,500 lifelong learners who register for 35,000 classes on the FAU campuses. The greatest number of these students are on the Boca and MacArthur campuses. There is a developing program on the Treasure Coast campus. On the Broward campus study is underway to determine how best to proceed with Lifelong Learning. Classes are offered during the fall, winter, and spring terms.
