Videoconferencing: Technical Considerations

Equipment in the Room
  • Teaching console with a computer and monitor connected to the network and Crestron panel for controlling equipment

  • Document camera (allows you to project printed or other non-digital media)

  • Wireless, clippable microphone for instructor and ceiling or desk microphones for students

  • Monitors for display (one or more television monitors are strategically placed so you can see how the session looks to the remote class. Therefore you can check that visuals are positioned properly, your writing is legible, prerecorded videos viewable).

  • Large front-mounted projection screens

  • Dual projectors

  • Speakers for remote location audio

  • SMARTBoard™ (electronic “whiteboard” – uses touch-sensitive display so what you write is transmitted via computer to the projector; display can be saved)

Preparation

  • Familiarize yourself with the classroom in which you will be teaching (the video-conferencing equipment may differ from classroom to classroom).
  • Arrive ten minutes before class is scheduled to begin to load your media so that you can check its display.
  • Do a sound and sight check at the beginning of each class session.
  • Be prepared for crisis management (for example, the sites are not connected by class time, the connection is broken during the lecture, or one site disappears from view) and know whmo to contact.

Useful Tips

  • Avoid unnecessary movement or walking about the room.

  • Ask students to turn off desk-mounted microphones until they speak as those microphones pick up all sounds, including shuffling of paper, pen/pencil scratching across paper, coughs, keyboard clicking.

  • Repeat student questions to ensure all locations hear it.
