Network & Security

IRM manages the campus computing network, known as FAUNET. It monitors the network for performance and reliability, develops new services, troubleshoots as needed, and provides assistance on a broad range of connectivity issues. All new FAU buildings are equipped to facilitate FAUNET connection. The FAUNET is a fiber optic-based, 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) that originates in the Computing Center (Building 22) on the Boca campus.

The FAU network is behind a firewall to protect FAU servers and desktop machines. Computers that need to be outside the firewall, such as web servers, can be placed outside in the "DMZ." To have your server in the DMZ, you will need to know its IP and complete the DMZ Approval form.

Getting Connected

Access to the FAUNET can be obtained through a direct hardwire connection, as well as wireless connections from various areas on FAU campuses.  In special cases, you can also connect through FAU's VPN. For information on obtaining a connection to FAUNET for a terminal, computer, or printer, contact the IRM helpdesk by submitting a ticket at http://www.fau.edu/helpdesk.

Much of the various FAU campuses are covered by a secure wireless network. Instructions are available for both Windows and MAC operating systems.

Installing & Moving Network Connections

IRM can install new network connections in campus buildings. The cost for a category 5 network drop (CAT-5) is $350.00. To have a new connection installed, or an existing connection moved, you'll need to submit a ticket on the Online Helpdesk. with the following information:

  • Type of connection (if not known our technicians will inform you what type is needed when they come out to survey the area).
  • Location - Campus, building and room numbers.
  • Account number.
  • Contact name and extension.

Other Networking Projects

FAU is also a member of the Internet2 ( I2), Florida LambdaRail ( FLR) and National LambdaRail ( NLR) projects. I2 is a group of 200 U.S. universities collaborating with government and industry to develop advanced network applications for research and to further develop the Internet. FLR is a consortium of higher education institutions developing a state-wide high-bandwidth research and education network for Florida. NLR is a group of U.S. research universities and technology companies working to provide national-scaled infrastructure for research and experimentation in networking technologies.
