Curricular Practical Training (CPT) -- 8 C.F.R. 214.2 (f) (10) (i)

Must be an “ integral part of an established curriculum,” and can be a internship/practicum course required in a degree program or optional but integral to student’s degree program or an internship/cooperative education program offered through the Career Development Center.

NOTE: Students enrolled in the College of Business or the College of Engineering should enroll in the COOP programs offered through their respective colleges.

Employment offer is required prior to request for CPT approval.

Written authorization must be obtained from an ISSS Advisor/Designated School Official (DSO) prior to the employment start date.

Must maintain F-1 status for at least one academic year (two consecutive full-time semesters) prior to start of CPT.

EXCEPTION: Graduate students required to complete an internship for their degree program may begin CPT any time during their program of study.

May be authorized Part-time (20 hours or less) or Full-time (20 hours or more).

Part-time CPT requires full-time enrollment and does not affect eligibility for OPT.

Full-time CPT reaching aggregate total of 12 months will cancel eligibility for OPT.

Graduate students who have completed all required coursework are not eligible for CPT.

EXCEPTION: CPT may be authorized if activity is necessary for data collection towards thesis/dissertation.

May be authorized for up to two semesters. Requests beyond the two semesters will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

NOTE: Students enrolled in the College of Business and College of Engineering must follow any additional internship/COOP guidelines established for their respective colleges .
