The Major

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics is designed to develop students' knowledge and analysis of language phenomena, to challenge students' critical and analytical skills through exploring in small seminars various aspects of syntax, semantics, phonetics/phonology, morphology, historical linguistics, second language acquisition, and bilingualism. The undergraduate typically begins a major by taking the Introduction to Linguistics course. Junior and Senior courses include seminars in various aspects of general linguistics as well as specific courses on the linguistics attributes of the language of their choice. Students are encouraged to make links between language and culture as well as language and literature. Majors are encouraged to double-major with other languages offered by the department (French, German, Italian, Spanish).
