FAU Upward Bound Program
UPWARD BOUND
Housed under the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Upward Bound (UB) Program is one of two Pre-College programs that targets high school students in Broward County. The main office is located on the FAU – Ft. Lauderdale campus.
The Upward Bound Program at FAU is a federally funded program under the National TRIO programs through the United States Department of Education. This program is a partnership between FAU and the Broward County School Board. It is designed to help high school students enter and complete a post-secondary education by increasing high school graduation rates and post-secondary enrollment rates of participants. Students who are eligible for the program have a documented need for academic support and are potentially low-income, first-generation college students.
ELIGIBILITY
Students wishing to participate in the Upward Bound Program must fall under these four major criteria:
- Participants must attend one of the following four target high schools in Broward County: Blanche Ely, Boyd Anderson, Coconut Creek, or Dillard;
- Participants must meet federal minimum income requirements;
- Participants must be potential first-generation college students;
- Participants must have a documented need for academic support
PROGRAM COMPONENTS
Upward Bound will participate in the following activities:
- Weekly after-school tutorials;
- Saturday academic instruction and enrichment;
- College tours, Field trips and Social/Cultural events;
- A four-week summer enrichment program on the FAU campus.
Through participation in the Upward Bound Program, participants will receive the following:
- Information on post-secondary education opportunities;
- Assistance in college-test prep exams;
- Assistance in completing college applications;
- Assistance in completing applications for financial aid and scholarships;
WHY UPWARD BOUND
The FAU Upward Bound Program staff are committed to serving as advocates for participants access to higher education. The program provides services to assist participants in achieving their educational goals; facilitates the educational development of students served; provides an environment that recognizes the diversity of backgrounds and learning styles of students; and develops collaborative relationships with institutions, organizations, and communities.
